The life and virtuosity of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791) was celebrated at the NYMC Music and Medicine event on November 17 in Nevins Auditorium. The program, which included a lecture by Stephen Moshman, M.D., fourth from left, SOM professor of clinical medicine, was complemented by musical selections performed by a string quartet from the Manhattan School of Music. Dr. Moshman examined the talent, genius and prodigy of Mozart, who during his short life of 35 years, composed more than 600 works including symphonies, concertos, operas, chamber and choral music. Dr. Moshman, who is also the conductor and music director of the Albert Einstein Symphony Orchestra, was joined by, from left: Edward C. Using a format that featured a series of brief but impactful one-on-one "interviews," the Seventh Annual SHSP Career Mentor Session, hosted by the Student Healthcare Executives Club (StuHE), offered students and recent alumni the opportunity to learn about a broad range of public health career opportunities in a very efficient manner. The event was organized by StuHE officers, with the guidance of faculty advisors Denise C. Tahara, M.B.A., M.Phil, Ph.D., associate professor of public health practice and director, M.P.H. Studies, and Michael P. Shakarjian, Ph.D., assistant professor and program director, M.P.H. Environmental Health Science Studies. The 14 career "mentors" included professionals representing behavioral/community health, global health, environmental health, hospital systems and pharmaceuticals, recruiters and County Health Commissioners. For the first time, remote-access mentor sessions were available for distance learning (DL) students and SHSP alumni. More than 60 students and alumni participated in the session and participant feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with students and recent graduates enthusiastic about the help and direction they received: "It was extremely helpful, I got a follow-up contact for the next day," said one attendee, with another adding, "This session helped me affirm my job path." The NYMC Radiation Oncology Interest Club was selected as a 2016-2017 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO)-Sponsored Cancer Interest Group and received a $500 grant. ASCO is committed to supporting the next generation of cancer care providers through Cancer Interest Groups and helps connect medical students with resources for careers in oncology.
