StuHE Hosts Seventh Annual Career Mentor Session

Using a format that featured a series of brief but impactful one-on-one "interviews," the Seventh Annual SHSP Career Mentor Session, hosted by the Student Healthcare Executives Club (StuHE), offered students and recent alumni the opportunity to learn about a broad range of public health career opportunities in a very efficient manner. The event was organized by StuHE officers, with the guidance of faculty advisors Denise C. Tahara, M.B.A., M.Phil, Ph.D., associate professor of public health practice and director, M.P.H. Studies, and Michael P. Shakarjian, Ph.D., assistant professor and program director, M.P.H. Environmental Health Science Studies. The 14 career "mentors" included professionals representing behavioral/community health, global health, environmental health, hospital systems and pharmaceuticals, recruiters and County Health Commissioners. For the first time, remote-access mentor sessions were available for distance learning (DL) students and SHSP alumni. More than 60 students and alumni participated in the session and participant feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with students and recent graduates enthusiastic about the help and direction they received: "It was extremely helpful, I got a follow-up contact for the next day," said one attendee, with another adding, "This session helped me affirm my job path." NYMC was well-represented at the Association of American Medical College's (AAMC) annual meeting held in Seattle, November 11-15.

D. Douglas Miller, M.D., C.M., M.B.A., dean of the School of Medicine (SOM), presented "Admissions Challenge: The AAMC Strategic Imperative - Selecting a "Culturally Competent, Diverse Workforce that Leads to Improved Health and Health Equity," at the Council of Dean's (COD) Ignite Session.

The NYMC SOM is the first medical school in the U.S. to require applicants to take CASPer (Computer-assisted Assessment of Personal Characteristics), an on-line video, scenario-based, situational judgment test designed to assess these core entry-level personal characteristics. Data gathering and administrative support were provided by SOM Office of Admissions staff, James Demaio, director of information management; Kristen Nestler, admissions coordinator; and Jamie Zelig, administrative assistant.
