Changes are Coming to NYMC's Open Enrollment and Payroll
|
As part of Touro's Project Enterprise, changes will soon be implemented to NYMC's open enrollment and payroll. This month, a new benefits administration system, SmartBen, will replace the current PeopleSoft eBenefits system for open enrollment for key benefits--medical, dental, vision and flexible spending. TouroOne Payroll, the integration of all payroll operations across the Touro College and University System including NYMC, will be rolled out and seamlessly integrated with other TouroOne modules, such as Finance and Student Services.

The Flu Vaccine is Now Available in Health Services
|
The seasonal flu vaccine is now available at the Office of Health Services located in the Basic Sciences Building for full-time students and employees. There is no charge for students and a $20 fee for employees. No appointment is necessary but the nurse practitioner is not available between the hours of 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. daily.

Joseph Morales, D.D.S.,
professor and chairman of the Department of Dental Medicine, received a one-year $460,591 training award from the Health Resources and Services Administration for "An Interdisciplinary Approach to Increase Access to and the Delivery of Oral Health Care to the Underserved in the Hudson Valley Region in a post-doc GenDentistry and PCMH Environment."

Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.B.A., dean of the School of Health Sciences and Practice and vice president for government affairs, received the 2015 Outstanding Achievement Award in the Application of Epidemiologic Information to Child Health Advocacy at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference and Exhibition held in Washington, D.C., October 24-27. The award was co-sponsored by the Academy's Section on Epidemiology, Public Health, and Evidence, and the Council on Community Pediatrics. He was recognized for his seminal role in pediatric epidemiology and children's environmental health and outstanding contributions in advocating for children in communities across America and in other parts of the world. Dr. Amler co-founded and secured Congressional funding for a national network of Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Units (PEHSU), which emerged as a logical outcome of a Presidential Task Force subcommittee on program implementation, that he chaired. Now in its 18th year, the network currently operates throughout the United States, with mirrored facilities in Canada, Mexico and several other countries on four continents. He also co-founded the
Children's Environmental Health Center of the Hudson Valley, a collaboration of NYMC faculty and physicians at Maria Fareri Children's Hospital at Westchester Medical Center,
with Allen J. Dozor, M.D., professor of pediatrics and clinical public health, chief of pediatric pulmonology, allergy and sleep medicine.
Two faculty members were recognized for their dedication, expertise, accomplishments and compassionate care at the Third Annual Doctors of Distinction award ceremony, held on October 29 at The Bristal at Armonk. Robert Gary Josephberg, M.D., clinical associate professor of ophthalmology, received the Excellence in Medical Research Award and Craig H. Zalvan, M.D., associate professor of clinical otolaryngology, received the Humanitarian Award. Westchester County health commissioner Sherlita Amler, M.D., M.S., distinguished lecturer in the School of Health Sciences and Practice and associate clinical professor of pediatrics in the School of Medicine, delivered the keynote address.
Esther L. Sabban, Ph.D.,
professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, participated in the annual meeting of Society for Neuroscience held in Chicago, October 17-21. She presented "Changes in Expression of CRH, NPY and Endocannabinoid Systems Related Genes in Amygdala in Response to Electrical Shock and Stress Reminder," co-authored with Lidia Serova, Ph.D., research associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, Ph.D. candidate Elizabeth Newman and Irit Akirav, Ph.D., and Norit Rosenblat, Ph.D., from the University of Haifa. She also presented "Locus Coeruleus Noradrenergic System Response to Traumatic Stress in PTSD Model and Early Intervention with Intranasal NPY" co-authored with Dr. Serova, post-doctoral fellow Marcela Laukova, Ph.D., Lishay Alaluf, Ph.D. '15, and Emelie Olsson, a visiting pharmacy student from University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Dr. Sabban also chaired the nanosymposium on "Stress Peptides and Factors."
Joseph M. Wu, Ph.D., professor and vice chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and M.S. program director, was the invited speaker at Iona College's Careers in Science Initiative (CSI) weekly program on October 27. Dr. Wu's presentation, "Exploring Science and Seeking Knowledge through Laboratory Research," reflected on his own scientific and academic journey and introduced the student attendees to the NYMC programs in the School of Medicine, Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences (GSBMS) and the School of Health Sciences and Practices Dr. Wu also presented information on the GSBMS' new program, PSM (professional science masters) and the STAR Program. Dr. Wu was accompanied by Ardalan Oraee, a Master of Science candidate working with Dr. Wu, who offered valuable student insights."
