BioInc@NYMC Hosts Forum for the Hudson Valley's Biomedical and Technology Start-Up Community


On February 17, Randi D. Schwartz, M.B.A., far right, director of BioInc@NYMC and associate dean for academic administration, School of Medicine, moderated a panel of five experts focused on growing and supporting biomedical innovation for a gathering of inventors, investors, start-ups, and other experts from the Hudson Valley's thriving biomedical community. The forum, held at BioInc@NYMC's Dana Road facility, discussed issues ranging from intellectual property to patents and the role of incubators such as BioInc@NYMC. The panel, from left were: Laurence Gottlieb, president and chief executive officer of the Hudson Valley Economic Development Corporation; Amy Gallup Klann, counsel, Leason Ellis; Marc Zemel, M.B.A., managing director, MKM Ventures, LLC, chief executive officer and co-founder of MOE Medical Devices and Retia Medical; Josephine Young, associate, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP; and Brian Pomper, executive director of the Innovation Alliance. Nathan Tinker (not pictured), executive director of New York Biotechnology Association, was the guest speaker.

First-year Dental Student Sworn into the U.S. Air Force

Touro College of Dental Medicine (TCDM) at New York Medical College student Jaymes Furnival, center, entered military service as a U.S. Air Force 2nd Lieutenant Reservist on February 22. He will continue his dental studies with support from an Air Force Health Professions Scholarship and participate in Commissioned Officer Training during summers while he completes his education. After graduating, he will be promoted to Captain and serve as an Air Force dentist. Jay P. "I am honored that the school took the time to set up the induction ceremony with the Dean's participation," said Mr. Furnival. "The school made this a very memorable event for me and my family." Twenty-first Annual Medical Student Research Forum Rescheduled for March 6

The 21st Annual Medical Student Research Forum has been rescheduled for Monday, March 6, in a modified format, thanks to Winter Storm Niko that shut down the eastern seaboard and NYMC on February 9. All faculty, staff and students are welcome. The schedule for the forum will be:

ACCOLADES
Felipe C. Cabello, M.D., professor of microbiology and immunology, gave an invited lecture, "Aquaculture and Antimicrobial Resistance: Still an Unexplored Health Issue?" at a recent Nexos Chile-USA meeting in Philadelphia sponsored by Drexel University School of Medicine. Nexos-Chile is a non-government organization aimed at fostering scientific exchanges between scientists in academia and industry in the United States and Chile.

Gary Stallings II, M.D., M.P.H., assistant dean of clinical sciences and associate professor of medicine, and Katharine Yamulla, director of the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center, presented a workshop at the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Conference on Medical Student Education in Anaheim, Calif., on February 11. Their presentation, in conjunction with Lori Solomon, M.D. '99, M.P.H. '09, associate dean for community health affairs and assistant professor of family and community medicine, "Clinical Skills Development: Mini OSCEs and Targeted Skills Sessions in the Third Year" discussed how NYMC has successfully established targeted OSCE sessions for many third-year clerkships, explored how to integrate robust, student centered formative experiences with additional check-in points as needed, and debated how to longitudinally track student progress over the course of their skills development.

Members of the inaugural class and faculty members of the Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York Medical College participated in the American Student Dental Association District 2 Day on the Hill in Albany on February 6 and 7. They had the opportunity to meet with the New York State Dental Association (NYSDA) Board of Trustees, members of the Empire Dental Political Action Committee, the NYSDA Council on Government Affairs, and New York State Senators and Assemblypersons. Topics discussed included the issue of dental loans and loan forgiveness for dentists who practice in New York State, incentives to get dentists to practice in underserved areas in New York State and the expansion of the scope of practice for dentists.
