Resident Research Day Highlights Scholarly Efforts of Residents
 New York Medical College and NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan hosted the 2018 Chancellor's Resident Research Day on February 21 at Metropolitan Hospital Center. Twenty posters representing work in the departments of medicine, rehabilitation medicine, pediatrics, surgery and psychiatry were presented. Medical Students Receive State-of-the-Art Emergency Ultrasound Training
 In the not so distant past, CAT scans were the ER doctor's first line of defense in diagnosing certain injury and illness, in spite of increasing evidence pointing to the dangers associated with the over use of CAT scans. Protocols are changing and New York Medical College (NYMC) is leading the way in providing clinical training in "point-of-care ultrasound" (POCUS) -- a vastly improved, safer alternative to CAT scans. On February 27, NYMC piloted a full-day "Introduction to Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Course" for medical students to learn POCUS procedures and techniques. Sponsored by the NYMC, the Center for Disaster Medicine's, new Center of Excellence in Precision Responses to Bioterrorism and Disasters, along with in-kind support from ultrasound manufacturers Fujifilm/SonoSite and GE Healthcare, the program aimed to equip medical students with advanced and capable diagnostic skills. Stuart A. Newman, Ph.D., professor of cell biology and anatomy, was the Impact Speaker at the 2018 Ernest Just Scientific Symposium at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, on February 23. The annual symposium commemorates the work and influence of the mid-20th century developmental biologist. Dr. Newman, who has written on Just's life and contributions, presented "'Physics and chemistry in a new dimension': E.E. Just's legacy in evolutionary developmental biology." He also participated in a panel discussion addressing comments and questions from the attendees, primarily African American students from the Southeast interested in careers in medicine and scientific research.

Michal L. Schwartzman, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Pharmacology, was invited to speak at the Angiotensin Gordon Research Conference - The RAAS: Emerging Interactions with the Microbiome, Immune and Nervous System, held in Ventura, Calif., February 18-23. She presented "20-HETE-RAS Interactions in Hypertension" and also served as a moderator of the "Power Hour," an open forum designed to help address the challenges women face in science and support the professional growth of women in communities.
