NYMC Receives the Business Council of Westchester Corporate Citizenship Award

NYMC was honored by the Business Council of Westchester at their annual Business Hall of Fame Gala on April 21 at Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle, N.Y. The College was awarded the Corporate Citizenship Award for its involvement in the surrounding communities including holding clinics for the impoverished and underserved, mentoring middle- and high-school students, as well as their teachers, and working with the disabled. Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.B.A., left, dean of the School of Health Sciences and Practice and vice president for government affairs, was proud to accept the award on behalf of NYMC from Marsha Gordon, M.B.A., D.B.A., president and chief executive officer of the Business Council of Westchester.

 

NYMC Celebrates Earth Day
T he College community commemorated Earth Day on April 22 with a lunchtime celebration that included a tree planting, lawn games and a picnic outside of Sunshine Cottage. First-year medical student  Peter Spyrou , kneeling in photo, a member of the Composting and Sustainability Committee, demonstrated how to plant and care for a seedling. Doctoral Projects Demonstrate Breadth and Depth of Physical Therapy 

Thirty-one future doctors of physical therapy gave presentations in poster and oral format in the categories of clinical research, education, and public health service at the 11th Annual Doctoral Project Presentation Day on April 23. The presentations were the result of work that began during the first year of study in the D.P.T. program. This year's projects included several new topics, as well as the expansion of work by previous students and community service projects allowing for continuity of important research and field work. The day was capped with a keynote presentation "Building Research Partnerships: How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Diane U. Jette, P.T., D.Sc., associate chair and professor, Department of Physical Therapy at MGH Institute of Health Professions in Boston. Read more...

New York Mets Tickets Raffle Winner
Congratulations to  Marie Rivera , administrator in the Office of Faculty Records, on winning a pair of tickets, courtesy of the chancellor's office, to the New York Mets game on April 21. Ms. Rivera, a long-time Mets fan, was thrilled they earned a 7-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves.
ACCOLADES

 

Francis B. Baccay, M.D. , assistant professor of surgery and of anesthesiology and assistant dean of student affairs, presented "Novel Surgical Paradigm and Technique: Applying Physics to Incisional/Ventral Hernia Repairs" at the First World Conference on Abdominal Wall Hernia Surgery in Milan, Italy on April 25.

 

 

William Angus Steadman II, vice president for strategic planning, vice provost and senior associate dean, School of Medicine, was named chair of the Association of American Medical Colleges' Professional Development Committee of the Group on Business Affairs (GBA). The Committee is charged with conceiving, developing, and implementing programs for the improvement of the skills of those engaged in the fiscal and administrative management of medical schools. He will also serve as a member of the Steering Committee of the GBA.

Tetyana Kobets, M.D., M.S. , assistant professor of pathology, received a six-month grant for $182,000 from TauRx Therapeutics for her work "Assessment of DNA Damage by Methylthioninium in Mice."
