Students Delve into an Array of Public Health Issues at SHSP Research Day

A roomful of insightful future public health professionals turned out in full-force for the School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP) Sixth Annual Research and Scholarship Day on May 3, when SHSP faculty judges had the difficult task of selecting winners from the wall-to-wall interdisciplinary research projects presented. Research topics ran the gamut-from low-birth weights to pediatric dental hygiene to balance function in children with autism. The event was co-chaired by Luis F. Riquelme, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, BCS-S, associate professor of speech-language pathology and program director of the pediatric dysphagia certificate program and Susan L. Department of Family and Community Medicine Hosts Sixth Annual Research Day

The Department of Family and Community Medicine hosted its Sixth Annual Research Day on May 9 to highlight the scholarly research of students, residents and faculty. Sonia A. Velez, M.D., J.D., assistant professor of family and community medicine and interim chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine, welcomed the audience, proud of the important work at New York Medical College of discovery and translation to serve the needs of patients and communities. She also welcomed keynote speaker Samuel M. Jones, M.D., clinical professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Population Health at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine, program director at the VCU- sponsored Fairfax Family Medicine Residency Program and vice chairman of the Department of Family Medicine at the Inova Fairfax Hospital. Dr. Jones presented "Our Critical Role in an Evolving Health Care System." Eighth Annual Paul K. Woolf, M.D., Pediatric Trainee Research Symposium Highlights New and Innovative Biomedical Research

The 8th Annual Paul K. Woolf, M.D., Pediatric Trainee Research Day, hosted by the Children's Health and Research Foundation, Inc., the Department of Pediatrics at New York Medical College and the Boston Children's Health Physicians on May 9, exhibited a wide array of basic, clinical, quality, and translational research. The event honored the memory of the late Paul K. Woolf, M.D., senior associate dean for Westchester Medical Center and associate professor of pediatrics, who passed away in 2010 at the age of 59. From left are: Michael Gewitz, M.D., professor and vice chairman of the Department of Pediatrics and physician-in-chief of Maria Fareri Children's Hospital; Priya Misra, M.D., a pediatric resident, who won in the category of quality research; Amanda Rahman, D.O., a pediatric neonatology fellow, who won in the category of clinical research; Selena Levine, D.O., a pediatric hematology/oncology transplantation fellow, who won in the category of basic research; Gaurav Nayyar, M.D., Ph.D., a pediatric hematology/oncology/stem cell transplantation fellow, who won in the category of translational research; Mitchell S. Cairo, M.D., professor of pediatrics, division of pediatric hematology, oncology and stem cell transplantation, and professor of medicine, pathology, microbiology and immunology, and cell biology and anatomy, who served a chair of the symposium; Krishnan Sankaran, M.D., M.P.H., associate professor of pediatrics; and Leonard J. Newman, M.D. '70, professor and chairman of the Department of Pediatrics.

The School of Medicine (SOM) Office of Admissions is seeking clinicians, faculty, staff and community members from the Westchester and greater New York metro area to serve as interviewers for the 2018-19 interview season. The admissions program uses a scenario-based interview format known as the Multiple Mini-Interview (MMI). 

What is the MMI? 

The MMI process is specifically designed to assess personal attributes of medical school applicants. These include professionalism, empathy, cultural competency, ethical grounding, critical thinking, interpersonal and communication skills among others. Read the full article...

SOM P2P Committee Recognizes Role Models at NYMC 

The School of Medicine (SOM) Peer to Peer (P2P) Committee celebrates the exemplary students of New York Medical College (NYMC) with Professionals of NYMC, a forum for students to recognize each other as peer role models and showcase students who demonstrate the ideals valued most as future healthcare professionals. The initiative recognizes medical students who embody the school's core graduation competencies, including outstanding acts of patient care, interpersonal and communication skills, collaboration and professionalism. It is the hope that Professionals of NYMC will inspire all members of the NYMC community to make a positive difference in the lives of others. One selected winner per class will receive recognition in their Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) during the application to residency process. Many students have been acknowledged by their peers for outstanding acts of kindness or patient care and you are invited you to nominate a student who goes above and beyond. ACCOLADES
Mitchell S. Cairo, M.D., professor of pediatrics, medicine, pathology, microbiology and immunology, and cell biology and anatomy, presented "Novel Immunotherapy in Pediatric Solid Tumors" at the Fifth Annual Pediatric Cancer Symposium, held in Milwaukee on May 10.

Jonathan A. N. Fisher, Ph.D., assistant professor of physiology, presented "The Journey Inward: A Multi-Scale Tour Through the Brain," at the "Music and the Brain" session hosted by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra Association and UT Southwestern at the SOLUNA Music and Arts Festival in Dallas on May 12.


Michael P. Shakarjian, Ph.D., assistant professor of public health and program director, M.P.H. Environmental Health Science Studies, and Marcela Laukova, Ph.D., adjunct assistant professor of public health, were invited to Bioscience Review 2018, a closed scientific conference organized by the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. In addition to presenting posters. "Developmental Differences in Tetramethylenedisulfotetramine-induced Syndrome and Treatment Efficacy in a Rat Model of Intoxication" and "A Mouse Model for Human Poisoning by Tetramethylenedisulfotetramine: Parameters Influencing Intoxication and Treatment" the latter was selected for a special lightning talk by Dr. Laukova.
 
Ben C. Watson, Ph.D., vice dean, School of Health Sciences and Practice, was named a 2018 Westchester Magazine Healthcare Hero. He was nominated for the award for founding, successfully launching, and directing NYMC's innovative program in speech-language pathology and his leadership of faculty and students and service as a volunteer with the Chappaqua Ambulance Corps.
The Department of Speech-Language Pathology was well represented at the New York State Speech-Language-Hearing Association Convention held in Rochester, N.Y., April 19 - 21. Oral presentations and posters presented by faculty, clinical instructors and students were well received during the professional meeting for speech-language pathologists, audiologists and speech-language-hearing-swallowing researchers. Rebecca D. Benjamin, M.S, CCC-SLP, clinical instructor of speech-language pathology, served as topic chair for medical speech-language pathology issues.
