New York Medical College Marks its 158th Commencement Ceremony, Bestowing Degrees on 395 Graduates

A feeling of celebration and accomplishment filled the air in the majestic grand hall of Carnegie Hall as New York Medical College's 158th Commencement exercises got underway-with all the expected pomp and circumstance delighting students, faculty and guests who filled the hall's five tiers to capacity. On May 24, the College awarded 206 doctor of medicine (M.D.) degrees, 37 doctor of physical therapy (D.P.T.) degrees, 3 doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees, 61 master of science (M.S.) degrees, 85 master of public health (M.P.H.) degrees and 3 doctor of public health (Dr.P.H.) degrees. The audience of family, friends and distinguished guests gathered to observe the proceedings, providing cheers, applause and standing ovations throughout the course of the evening. NYMC Unveils the Center of Excellence in Precision Medicine and Responses to Bioterrorism and Disasters

A dedication ceremony marking the unveiling of the Center of Excellence in Precision Medicine and Responses to Bioterrorism and Disasters at 7 Dana Road was held on June 5.The Center, the first of its kind in the Hudson Valley, will combine New York Medical College's globally recognized assets in disaster medicine and medical countermeasures with individualized precision medical strategies against biological and chemical threats and seek to translate research findings in order to protect Americans from the threat of catastrophic bioterrorism and man-made disasters. The Center was created with funding from New York State with the support of New York State Senator Terrence Murphy, center. On hand for the event were, from left: New York State Assemblyman Thomas Abinanti, Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.B.A., dean of the School of Health Sciences and Practice and vice president for government affairs; Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino, and Michael J. Reilly, Dr.P.H. Office of Medical Education Hosts Preceptor Appreciation Banquet

The Office of Medical Education paid tribute to preceptors who welcome medical students into their private practices, hospitals, clinics and a variety of other settings and to small group leaders at the annual Preceptor Appreciation Banquet held on May 16 in the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center. This year's event celebrated the dedication of 36 volunteer physicians who were marking milestones of 5-, 10-, 15-, 20- and 25- years of service in the program. Preceptors and small group leaders play an integral role in undergraduate medical education at NYMC, supervising and serving as role models for medical students completing the Foundations of Clinical Medicine course. SHSP Applauds New Honor Society Inductees

The School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP) celebrated its newest members of the Delta Alpha Chapter of the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health, and Alpha Eta, the national honor society for allied health professionals at its second annual induction ceremony on May 18. This year, Delta Alpha inducted 15 new members and Alpha Eta welcomed 17 new members, including students, alumni and faculty who meet the societies' rigorous criteria. View the photo gallery here. TCDM Makes Progress on Dental Clinic

Jerome D'Imperio, left, vice president of real estate construction, design and development at Touro and NYMC, and Edward F. Farkas, D.D.S., senior associate dean for clinical affairs and chairman of dentistry, review construction plans for the future community clinic of the Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York Medical College. Scheduled to open in December, the 132-chair, state-of-the-art facility will offer adults and children comprehensive oral health care from TCDM's experienced faculty and dentists-in-training.

ACCOLADES
Anubhav G. Amin, M.D., PGY IV resident in the Department of Neurosurgery, was awarded second place for his presentation, "Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells & the Anti-Inflammatory Compound Curcumin Synergistically Modulate the Immune Response following Spinal Cord Injury leading to Enhanced Recovery," at the Annual New York State Neurosurgical Society Meeting, held at the Harvard Club of New York City on May 19. Dr. Amin's research work was performed under the guidance of Meena Jhanwar-Uniyal, Ph.D., research associate professor of neurosurgery.

Astorino joined community leaders and health professionals on June 7 at the Westchester County Center, to kick off a new initiative, "Westchester Opioid Response Teams Helping You" (WORTHY), as part of the county-wide Safer Communities program.

Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.B.A., center, dean of the School of Health Sciences and Practice and vice president for government affairs, welcomed the New York State Mid-Hudson Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) and Marist College president-emeritus Dennis Murray, Empire State Development regional director Meghan Taylor, to NYMC on June 2. The REDC, which prioritizes requests for development projects from across the region, has helped NYMC obtain state funding for BioInc@NYMC and the Touro College of Dental Medicine at NYMC, and Innovation Hot Spot designation, as well as substantial urban revitalization dollars in Middletown N.Y., home of a Touro COM campus.

Amy Ansehl, M.S.N., D.N.P., FNP-BC, right, assistant dean, associate professor and executive director of the Partnership for a Healthy Population and assistant professor of family and community medicine, was recognized as a Nurse of the Year, at the first annual Nurses of the Year celebration on May 18 hosted by Senator Terrence Murphy. The awards recognize the contributions made by nurses in the 40th Senate District, particularly in their roles as volunteers, mentors and departmental leaders. Padmini Murthy, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., M.Phil., CHES, professor of health policy and management and global health director and clinical assistant professor of family and community medicine, joined her colleague in the celebration.

Nora V. Bergasa, M.D., professor of medicine and chief of medicine at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan, was recognized with the 2017 Heritage Innovation in Healthcare Delivery Award, presented by Heritage Provider Network and Crain's Custom Studio at a luncheon at the New York Athletic Club on May 22. The award recognizes an innovator in the development of new modes of diagnosis, treatment, and care who actively improves the delivery of services and improves the quality of health care.

Mitchell S. Cairo, M.D., professor of pediatrics, medicine, pathology, microbiology and immunology, and cell biology and anatomy, was appointed to the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Pediatric Research for a term of six years.

Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer, gave the keynote address, Slave Medicine, the Banality of Evil, and their Implications for Modern Medicine, at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine commencement exercises on May 25 at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. Dr. Haperin received the degree of Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa.

Jennifer L. Koestler, M.D., senior associate dean for medical education and associate professor of pediatrics and medicine, was invited to serve on the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Curriculum Inventory Advisory Board. The Advisory Board is responsible for thinking broadly about the continuum of medical education and making considerations for how the tools can be used at each educational level and across educational levels. The Board also provides input to the AAMC of each component Curriculum Inventory and Reports, the benchmarking and reporting tool on content, structure, delivery, and assessment of medical school curricula.

The laboratories of Jan Geliebter, Ph.D., professor of microbiology and immunology and associate professor of otolaryngology, and Raj K. Tiwari, Ph.D., professor of microbiology and immunology and associate professor of otolaryngology, were well represented at the Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research held in Washington D.C., April 1 - 5. The laboratory members presented advances in research on the molecular biology, molecular pathology and immunology of thyroid, breast, prostate and skin cancers that were conducted along with clinical collaborators: Augustine Moscatello, M.D., M.D., chairman and professor of clinical otolaryngology; Marc K. Wallack, M.D., professor of surgery; Abraham Mittelman, M.D., clinical associate professor of medicine and adjunct associate professor of microbiology and immunology; Monica D. Schwarcz, M.D., associate professor of medicine; Dumitru A. Iacobas, Ph.D., associate professor of pathology; and ECRIP Fellows, JK John Rasamny, M.D., assistant professor of otolaryngology; Tali Lando, M.D., assistant professor of clinical otolaryngology; Cameron L.
