Victor T. Madubuko Is Named Diversity and Inclusion Officer
   
New York Medical College is pleased to welcome Victor T. Madubuko as the new diversity and inclusion officer for the College. In this role, Mr. Madubuko will build on the foundation developed by the Committee on Diversity and Inclusion to develop and execute a targeted action plan for the School of Medicine that ensures the College is reaching, recruiting and retaining a diverse pool of faculty and staff candidates.

Mr. Madubuko brings a breadth of experience-both professional and personal-to this position. Since 2007, Mr. Madubuko has worked as an independent human resources consultant connecting talent and institutions, both nationally and internationally, with a particular focus on helping global companies develop and implement talent management strategy plans across Africa. Prior to that, he held human resources positions with Equinox Fitness Clubs, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and Con Edison.  Read more...


Department of Family and Community Medicine Hosts Annual Faculty Appreciation Dinner

The Department of Family and Community Medicine hosted its annual Faculty Appreciation Dinner and Awards Ceremony on May 25 in the Skyline dining room. The evening began with a faculty development workshop, "Happy Student, Happy Teacher: Creating a Positive Learning Relationship," led by Sally Schwab, Ph.D., M.S.W., assistant dean for faculty development, assistant professor of medicine and course director of Learning to Teach. Lori Weir Solomon, M.D. '99, M.P.H. '09, center, assistant professor of family and community medicine and clerkship director, offered insight into recent family medicine clerkship updates and the evening concluded with the presentation of 5-, 15- and 20- year service awards for preceptors and outstanding service awards. NYMC Honors Preceptors and Seminar Leaders at Annual Dinner

The Annual Preceptor and Appreciation Banquet was hosted by the Office of Medical Education on June 8 at the Clinical Skills and Stimulation Center where the student community assessment projects were on display. The evening honored volunteer physicians who welcome medical students into their private practices, hospitals, clinics and a variety of other medical settings to give them the opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom to direct patient care. Preceptors play an integral role in undergraduate medical education in the Foundations of Clinical Medicine courses, supervising and serving as role models for medical students and imparting their knowledge, wisdom and experience on taking a history, performing a physical exam, the doctor-patient relationship, clinical reasoning, humanism, professionalism, health promotion and disease prevention. School of Medicine Joins Ranks of AAMC Te4Q Sites

More than 30 members of the School of Medicine faculty, Westchester Medical Center staff, quality experts and administrators completed a two-day Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Teaching for Quality (Te4Q) Train the Trainers session held in the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center, June 14 - 15. Te4Q is an AAMC faculty development program that trains clinical faculty how to teach quality improvement and patient safety (QI/PS) to medical students, residents and other clinicians. Its intent is to ensure QI/PS is integrated across the continuum of medical education. The program consists of a combination of assessments, an on-site workshop, the development of an educational project, and expert mentoring. With this completed, NYMC joins the national network of Te4Q sites with advanced expertise in health care quality improvement.


ACCOLADES
Amy Ansehl D.N.P., FNP-BC, assistant dean, associate professor of public health practice and executive director of the Partnership for a Healthy Population, received the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award for Nursing Administration from the Columbia University School of Nursing at its Alumni Reunion on May 20. The award recognizes and honors outstanding nurses whose work best exemplifies Columbia Nursing's values and whose leadership, achievements, and significant contributions demonstrate an innovative, scalable, and sustainable approach to nursing that has a significant impact on the lives of many people. 

John L. Gillick, M.D. , a PGY V resident in the Department of Neurosurgery, instructor or neurosurgery, won an award for his presentation, "Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Curcumin Enhance Recovery from Spinal Cord Injury by Altering the Immune Response" at the New York State Neurosurgical Society Annual Meeting, held at the Harvard Club in New York City on June 3. His work was conducted under the supervision of Meena Jhanwar-Uniyal, Ph.D. , research associate professor of neurosurgery.

In observance of World Environment Day, School of Health Sciences and Practice faculty presented at the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) START (Skills and Technology Advancing Rapid Transformation) series conference "Our Environment & Our Health: Science and Solutions" on June 6 at the United Nations. From left: Diane E. Heck, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Environmental Science, who presented "An Ancient Problem: Lead and Children"; Padmini Murthy, M.D., M.P.H., FAMWA, FRSPH, associate professor of public health practice, health policy and management, clinical assistant professor of family and community medicine and global health program director, who presented "Women's Health and the Environment"; and Amy Ansehl D.N.P., FNP-BC, assistant dean, associate professor of public health practice and executive director of the Partnership for a Healthy Population, who presented "Children's Environmental Health." Also pictured is David Stillman, Ph.D., executive director of the Public-Private Alliance Foundation. 

Mark Herceg, Ph.D. , lecturer in the Department of Epidemiology and Community Health and commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Mental Health, presented "The Role of Pre-Existing Factors on Baseline and Post-Concussion Outcome" at the Brain Injury Association of NYS's (BIANYS) Annual Professional Symposium held June 9 - 10 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Dr. Herceg was also selected to co-chair a new work group of BIANYS and the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Service Coordinating Council, an advisory council which reports to the New York State Department of Health. The group will examine law, loopholes and how care and management are provided state wide, professional training, education, awareness and impact on youth development. 

Gary P. Wormser, M.D. , professor of medicine, chief of Division of Infectious Diseases and vice chairman of Department of Medicine, was a nominated author at the 2016 Charles C. Shepard Science Awards Ceremony on June 8 held at the Roybal Campus at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. The awards recognize authors of the most outstanding peer-reviewed research papers published by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) during the preceding year. 


The Department of Pharmacology was well represented at the Experimental Biology 2016 meeting held in San Diego, April 2-6. 

Petra Rocic, Ph.D. , associate professor of pharmacology, chaired a session on "New Approaches for Induction of Arteriogenesis" and presented "Deregulated Apoptosis and Proliferation are Key Components of Impaired Coronary Collateral Growth in the Metabolic Syndrome."

Sachin Gupte, M.D., Ph.D. , associate professor of pharmacology, presented "Vascular Smooth Muscle Phenotype Plays a Critical Role in Abnormal Coronary Artery Remodeling in Metabolic Syndrome." Dr. Gupte also presented a poster "L-Type Ca2+ Current Increase by Rotenone, Stimulant of Mitochondrial Superoxide Release, in A7r5 Arterial Smooth Muscle Cells: Effect of Dithiothreitol, Hydrogen Peroxide, Tempol and Staurosporine."

Wenhui Wang, M.D. , professor of pharmacology, presented "Regulation of Kir.4.1 in the Kidney."

Nicholas R. Ferreri, Ph.D. , professor of pharmacology, and Shoujin Hao, Ph.D., research associate of pharmacology, presented a poster "Zinc Supplementation Activates Nfe2l2/ARE-MT2 Antioxidant Pathway in a Model of Diabetic Nephropathy."

Xiaotong Su , a Ph.D. candidate, presented a poster and gave a talk "Down-Regulation of Kir4.1 Eliminates the Basolateral K Conductance in the Distal Convoluted Tubule and Inhibits NCC Activity." Ms. Su received a Meritorious Research Award from the American Physiological Society Epithelial Transport Group and was also a Pre-doctoral Excellence in Renal Research Award Finalist of the American Physiological Society Renal Section.

Gregory Joseph , a Ph.D. candidate, presented a poster "Neutrophil-Derived 20-HETE is a Major Determinant of Coronary Collateral Growth."

Amanda Soler , left, a Ph.D. candidate, presented a poster "20-HETE Increases Large Artery Stiffness and Systolic Blood Pressure in Metabolic Syndrome."

Also of note is Rebecca Hutcheson, Ph.D., right, a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Michal Laniado Schwartzman, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Pharmacology, who received an award certificate from the University of South Alabama Graduate School and The Council of Graduate Schools and was recognized by the College of Medicine, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for the "outstanding dissertation" for the years July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2015 for her 2013 dissertation "Regulation of Smooth Muscle Phenotype during Coronary Collateral Growth in the Metabolic Syndrome."

The construction of the new driveway through the wooded area connecting the main campus and 19 Skyline Drive is underway. The project is expected to take several months. There is orange safety fencing around the construction site and no one is permitted to walk through the wooded area during the construction project.
