Professor Emeritus Catherine N. Hinterbuchner, M.D., Leaves Legacy of Endowed Professorship and Chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine

New York Medical College is the recipient of a $3 million gift to establish the Catherine and Ladislav P. Hinterbuchner Professorship and Chair in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan to support teaching and training of medical students and residents and to foster research. The endowment is from the estate of Catherine Hinterbuchner, M.D., who led the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine -- as the College's first woman chair -- and was chief of rehabilitation medicine at both Metropolitan Hospital Center and Lincoln Hospital in New York City for nearly 40 years. School of Medicine Hosts First Microbiome Translational Science Conference

The NYMC Microbiome Translational Science Institute (MTSI) held its first scientific program on June 15 at the NYMC Executive Education Center at 7 Dana Road. The program brought together clinical experts, researchers and students to explore the role of the Human Microbiome in health and in the pathogenesis of disease. D. Douglas Miller, M.D., C.M., M.B.A., far right, dean of the School of Medicine, welcomed the audience, noting that this was the first time that NYMC has convened an event focused exclusively on microbiome science and its role in maintaining health and causing diseases. The half-day symposium featured experts from a range of academic disciplines, including pathology, microbiology and immunology, biomedical sciences, pharmacology, biochemistry and molecular biology, as well as scientists from NYMC's industry partners, Philips Healthcare Research and Janssen Research & Development. The goal of the scientific program was to raise awareness of the Human Microbiome, an area of rapidly increasing research focus and of pharmaceutical industry investment. Read more...

Department of Family and Community Medicine Hosts Annual Preceptor Appreciation Dinner

The Department of Family and Community Medicine hosted its annual Preceptor Appreciation Dinner and Awards Ceremony on June 14 in the Skyline dining room. The evening began with a faculty development workshop, "Keep the Passion for Family Burning and Pass the Torch On" led by Lori Weir Solomon, M.D. '99, M.P.H. '09, left, associate dean for community health affairs, assistant professor of family and community medicine and family medicine clerkship director, and Johnny G. Kovoor, M.D., clinical associate professor of family and community medicine. The SOM Office of Admissions is seeking volunteers from the NYMC community to serve as interviewers for the upcoming interview season. SOM P2P Committee Recognizes Role Models at NYMC

The School of Medicine (SOM) Peer to Peer (P2P) Committee developed Professionals of NYMC to provide a forum for students to recognize each other as peer role models and showcase students who demonstrate the ideals valued most as future healthcare professionals. The initiative recognizes students in the NYMC community who embody the school's core graduation competencies, including outstanding acts of patient care, interpersonal and communication skills, collaboration and professionalism. It is the hope that Professionals of NYMC will inspire all members of the NYMC community to make a positive difference in the lives of others. One selected winner per class will receive recognition in their Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) during the application to residency process. Be sure to stop by the Chancellor's latest exhibit, presenting items of interest on the history of medicine and science displayed on the wall between Doc's Café and the bookstore in the Basic Sciences Building. The current exhibit features Lt. Col. John McCrae, M.D. (1872 - 1918), on first day covers. A first day cover is an envelope or card bearing a stamp which is cancelled on the first day the stamp is on sale. Dr. McCrae was a Canadian poet, physician, author, artist and soldier during World War I and is best known for penning the poem In Flanders Fields. Stop by the exhibit to learn more about Dr. McCrae.

Susan L. Ronan, P.T., D.P.T., P.C.S., center, assistant professor of physical therapy, was awarded the 2017 Dr. Marilyn Moffat Award for Distinguished Service at the New York State Physical Therapy Association (NYPTA) Leadership Development Workshop, held May 19 - 20 in Albany. The award recognizes members of the NYPTA who have made an outstanding contribution, and demonstrated consistent service to the physical therapy profession. It is the highest award given by the NYPTA. The award is named for Marilyn Moffat, P.T., D.P.T., Ph.D., D.Sc. (hon), GCS, CSCS, CEEAA, FAPTA, left, professor of physical therapy at the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development and was presented by Michael Mattia P.T., D.P.T., M.S., M.H.A., right, NYPTA president.
Also at the meeting, third-year Doctor of Physical Therapy student Paul Spano, left, was presented with a Student Participation Award at the meeting for his leadership, initiative, clinical competency and extracurricular activities related to the profession of physical therapy.


Esther L. Sabban, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, presented "Potential of Intranasal Neuropeptide Y and or Melanocortin 4 Receptor Antagonists for Preventing or Treated Post-traumatic Stress Disorder" at the International Conference on Trauma and Mental Health, held May 21 - 23 in Jerusalem, Israel.

The conference focused on the health care for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The students were supported by funding from a grant from the Special Hope Foundation to the Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD). Karen S. Edwards, M.D., M.P.H. '91, professor of Center on Disability and Health in the School of Health Sciences and Practice, adjunct associate professor of pediatrics, and vice president for education, training and research, LEND program director at WIHD, is the project director for this grant that supports resident, medical student and dental student education on providing health care for people with disabilities. Ms. Crown and Mr. Tarr presented a poster at the conference, "Interprofessional Virtual Ground Rounds: A case study forum of the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry."
