Diane E. Heck, Ph.D., Is Appointed Associate Dean for Research in the School of Health Sciences and Practice

Diane E. Heck, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Environmental Health Science, has been named associate dean for research in the School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP). In her new additional role, she will lead the development and implementation of strategies for achieving the school's research goals, identify and communicate sources of external funding, and facilitate and encourage innovation and entrepreneurship. She will also work closely with the faculty to develop and write proposals, lead initiatives to write and develop strategic interdisciplinary college-wide sponsored research projects, and establish internal and external research partnerships. Dr. Heck will focus significant effort toward the development and translation of funding-ready and funded projects, as well as building sustainable research enterprises. Read more...

Bridge and Seed Funding Grants Awarded

Researchers at NYMC, Touro College of Pharmacy and Touro College of Dental Medicine are the recipients of a series of grants supporting their research for the 2017-2018 program year. The bridge grants sustain research projects between larger grant funding, and seed grants enable researchers to gather initial data. This round of bridge and seed grants is part of the Touro College and University System (TCUS) strategy to sustain and enlarge the University's research enterprise. The recipients' projects were reviewed as part of a rigorous peer review process, as well as recommendations by the TCUS Biomedical and Health Sciences Research Council. Read more...

Ronnie Myers, D.D.S., Is Named Dean of the Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York Medical College

As the Touro College of Dental Medicine (TCDM) at New York Medical College begins its second year, Ronnie Myers, D.D.S., has assumed the role of dean. Dr. Myers previously served as senior associate dean for academic and administrative affairs. TCDM Founding Dean Jay P. Goldsmith, D.M.D., will now be dean emeritus and continue to advise the dental school leadership and students. Prior to joining TCDM, Dr. Myers served as vice dean for administration at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine. In his new leadership position, he plans to develop a unique program that incorporates many aspects of primary health care into the oral health care environment and to distinguish TCDM by educating students on incorporating emerging technologies into the modern daily practice of dentistry.

NYMC SOM and Touro Law Center Collaborate

The verdict is in. The first interdisciplinary course between the NYMC School of Medicine (SOM) and the Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center, commonly known as Touro Law Center, was a success. The course, "Practice Skills in Medical Professional Liability Defense," for medical and law students, introduced medical malpractice concepts and issues related to medical malpractice trials and examined aspects of medical malpractice law, expert testimony, patient safety, quality regulation, as well as professional expectations and standards of care as they relate to the medical profession from a legal as well as ethical perspective. The course culminated in a medical malpractice mock trial that was held at NYMC in April.  Read more...

School of Medicine Office of Admissions Seeks Interviewers

The School of Medicine (SOM) Office of Admissions is seeking volunteers from the NYMC community to serve as interviewers for the upcoming interview season. Five years ago, the SOM was the first medical school in New York State to adopt an innovative scenario-based interview format known as the Multiple Mini-Interview (MMI). Read more...

Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.B.A., at podium, dean of the School of Health Sciences and Practice and vice president for government affairs, was an invited speaker at a press conference convened by Senator Charles Schumer, left, on July 5 to urge the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to fast-track funding for research for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections.

Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., far right, chancellor and chief executive officer, was an organizer of the Congress of the Paediatric Radiation Oncology Society (PROS) held in New York City, June 21 - 24.

Michal L. Schwartzman, Ph.D., right, professor and chair of the Department of Pharmacology, and Nader G. Abraham, Ph.D., second from right, professor of medicine and pharmacology, were invited speakers at two recent meetings in Italy. Dr. Schwartzman presented "20-HETE in Obesity and Related Cardiovascular Complications," and Dr. Abraham presented "Pharmacological Effect of Epoxyeicosatrienoic Acid-PGC1-HO-1 in Obesity and Diabetic Heart Disease," at the New Perspectives in Metabolic Syndrome NAFLD/NASH, held at the University of Padova on May 23. Dr. Schwartzman presented "20-HETE in Obesity/Hypertension," and Dr. Abraham presented "EET Intervention in HO-1, Mitochondrial and Thermogenic Genes Signaling Prevents Obesity-induced Cardiomyopathy," at the International Workshop on "New Frontiers in Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine," held at the Scuola Superiore di Catania on May 25. Dr. Abraham also served as scientific organizer and gave opening remarks, while Dr. Schwartzman served on the consulting committee of the meeting. They were joined by Joseph W. Werthammer, M.D., left, professor of pediatrics and chief medical officer, Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, Marshall University and Francesco Basile, second from left, rector of University of Catania, Italy.

Katharine Yamulla, director of the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center, was named to the Business Council of Westchester 2017 Class of Rising Stars, at a reception on June 15, in Rye Brook, N.Y. The Rising Stars program is modeled after the national business recognition program "40 Under 40" and honorees are chosen based on professional and/or entrepreneurial accomplishments, professional and/or business affiliations, and demonstrated leadership skills.
