Marina Kaufman Holz, Ph.D., Is Named Dean of the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences
Marina Kaufman Holz, Ph.D.
, has been appointed dean of the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences (GSBMS), succeeding Francis L. Belloni, Ph.D., who has retired after serving as dean since 1997. A seasoned researcher and educator, Dr. Holz will officially join the New York Medical College community on September 1, coming from the Stern College of Yeshiva University where she served as the Doris and Dr. Ira Kukin Chair in Biology, chair of the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and holder of a joint appointment in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dana G. Mordue, Ph.D., associate professor of microbiology and immunology, is serving as interim dean of the GSBMS until the arrival of Dr. Holz.

Center for Disaster Medicine Brings Military Training to Westchester County's Bravest Police
When active shooter and other mass casualty events occur, survivability often comes down to how well first responders react. On June 20, with a duty to keep their communities safe amidst the worst possible situations, 24 of Westchester County's bravest special response team (SRT) officers arrived at New York Medical College's (NYMC) Center for Disaster Medicine for a special training program on tactical and austere medicine. The program taught state-of-the-art operational medical techniques developed on the battlefields of Afghanistan and Iraq and customized here at NYMC for civilian law enforcement. During the intense full-day training, officers participated in an active shooter simulation, experienced a sensory immersion simulator, and underwent detailed patient casualty scenarios enhanced by the use of moulage -- hyper-realistic make-up used to add realism to training scenarios.

School of Medicine First Day of Giving Raises More Than $450,000 to Support Next Generation of Medical Leaders
 For 24 hours starting at noon sharp on June 27, the New York Medical College community rallied to raise $456,636 for medical student scholarships during the School of Medicine's (SOM) inaugural Day of Giving campaign. Led by the SOM Alumni Association and other key donors who matched the funds donated, the Day of Giving will enable students to pursue their medical education regardless of economic background, and pursue their specialty of choice based on their passion for that field, regardless of income potential. "I couldn't be more thrilled and thankful for how successful our first Day of Giving was. The scholarship money will make a tremendous difference in reducing the indebtedness of our medical students," said Anthony M. Sozzo, M.A., M.S. Ed., associate dean for student affairs and director of student financial planning and student activities.

School of Medicine Class of 2020 Transitions to the Clinical Years
 The Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) Student Clinician Ceremony on June 29 marked another milestone in the medical education of the Class of 2020 -- the beginning of the clinical years. The ceremony was created by the GHHS to provide guidance, information and support to medical students as they start their clerkships and underscore the challenges and imperatives to providing humanistic care to patients. Dennis L. Bordan, M.D., adjunct professor of surgery, associate dean, director of medical education and associate chair of surery at St. Joseph's University Medical Center, shared his advice and experience in his keynote address to the class. The ceremony also included the presentation of the Gold Foundation's Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Awards to six residents selected by the outgoing third-year class for exhibiting strong teaching skills and being role models for compassionate, relationship-centered care: Karl Genovese, M.D., PGY1, family medicine, St. Joseph's University Medical Center; Stephanie Yee, D.O., PGY2, general surgery, St. Joseph's University Medical Center; Emily Rosenfeld, D.O., PGY1, obstetrics and gynecology, Metropolitan Hospital Center; Clive Liu, M.D., PGY2, obstetrics and gynecology, Metropolitan Hospital Center; Miles Dale, M.D., general surgery, Westchester Medical Center; Breige O'Donnell Smith, M.D. '16, PGY1, pediatrics, Maria Fareri Children's Hospital.  Jenean Castillo, M.A., Ph.D., assistant professor, Center on Disability and Health in the School of Health Sciences and Practice, was appointed director of the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disabilities (LEND) interdisciplinary training program at the Westchester Institute for Human Development.

Meena Jhanwar-Uniyal, Ph.D., research associate professor of neurosurgery, delivered two talks, "Precision Medicine: From Discovery to Cure" and "Biology Driven Treatment and Redefining the Classification of Glioma in the Era of Precision Medicine," at the Institute of Histology and Embryology, Catholic University School of Medicine in Rome, Italy, on June 14.

 Lu (Kelly) Liu, M.D., a visiting student from Beijing in the laboratory of Nader G. Abraham, Ph.D., Dr. H.C., professor of medicine and pharmacology, presented a poster, "Ablation of Soluble Epoxide Hydrolase Expression Increases Beige Fat over White Fat through an Increase in Mitochondrial Integrity, HO-1-UCP-adiponecitn in vitro and in vivo," at the ASPET Annual Meeting at Experimental Biology 2018 held in San Diego, April 21-25. She won second place for the ASPET 2018 Student/Postdoc Poster Competition in the postdoctoral category in the Division for Translational and Clinical Pharmacology.

Paul Lucas Ph.D., associate professor of orthopaedic surgery and director of orthopaedic research, was an invited speaker and presented "Multipotent Adult Stem Cells (MASCs): Characterization and Regeneration" at the 10th World Advanced Therapies and Regenerative Medicine Congress held in London, May 16-18. Dr. Lucas was an organizing committee member, invited speaker and session chair at the 9th International Conference and Exhibition on Tissue Science and Regenerative Medicine Conference held in Las Vegas, April 23 - 24, where he also presented "Multipotent Adult Stem Cells (MASCs): Characterization and Regeneration."

 Padmini Murthy, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., FAMWA, FRSPH, professor of public health in the Division of Health Policy and Management and global health director, was invited to visit the Tzu Chi Foundation Medical Center in Tawain, a state of the art medical facility which provides free care to indigenous people. The Tzu Chi Foundation is an international humanitarian and non-governmental organization with over 10 million members worldwide throughout 47 countries. Dr. Murthy's visit on June 11 was featured on Taiwanese televison.

Newman, Ph.D., professor of cell biology and anatomy, co-organized a symposium on "Inherency in Development and Evolution" at the 7th meeting of the European Society for Evolutionary Developmental Biology in Galway, Ireland, June 27. He presented "Animal Bodies Originated Via the Inherent Properties of Novel Biological Forms of Matter."

Daohong Lin, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of pharmacology, received a four-year grant totaling $1,476,000 from the National Institutes of Health for "Kir5.1 Regulates Kir4.1 Ubiquitination by Nedd4-2 in DCT."

 Penghua Wang, Ph.D., assistant professor of microbiology and immunology, received a four-year grant totaling $2,016,175 from the National Institutes of Health for "The Role of UBXNs in Antiviral Immunity."
