NYMC Welcomes SOM Class of 2020
Two hundred and thirteen new students descended on the campus to officially become the NYMC School of Medicine Class of 2020. A week of activities during "Transition to Medical School" prepared the new cohort as they launched their medical education. They learned about professionalism, the virtues of being a physician, academic policies and the student honor code. There were social events, including an evening cruise around Manhattan, to get acquainted and more routine activities like getting health clearances, being fitted for white coats and buying stethoscopes to help prepare them for the next four years of their lives. One of the highlights of the week was the introduction to gross anatomy class-a defining experience of medical school-to meet their lab partners, experience the first palpation of a cadaver, and learn anatomy lab protocol and etiquette.

Andrew Mutnick, M.D. '01, Is Named SOM Associate Dean for Student Affairs
 Once an auspicious member of the School of Medicine Class of 2001, Andrew Mutnick, M.D. '01, has returned to NYMC as associate dean for student affairs. Dr. Mutnick brings exceptional educational and leadership experience to his new role, which includes developing and administering student affairs programs and serving as advisory dean of the Stowe House. He reports to Gladys M. Ayala, M.D., M.P.H., vice chancellor of medical student affairs and SOM senior associate dean for student affairs. Read more...

SOM Office of Admissions Seeks MMI Interviewers
 The Office of Admissions is seeking volunteers from the NYMC community to serve as interviewers for the upcoming interview season. Four years ago, the NYMC School of Medicine (SOM) was the first medical school in New York State to adopt the scenario-based interview format known as the Multiple Mini-Interview (MMI). Read more...

SOM Offers High School Students Hands-On Look at Medicine
 More than 450 high school students passed through the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center during July and August to learn about airway management, knot tying and suturing, and the cardio-pulmonary system using Sim Man 3G. The students were participating in the week-long Envision National Youth Leadership Forum in Medicine, an experiential education organization dedicated to enabling students to explore their interests and gain critical learning experiences beyond the classroom. Katharine Yamulla, director of the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center, organized the visits and developed the curriculum, which was executed by volunteer medical students, residents and faculty. "We are one of only 13 simulation centers in the nation utilized in their program. This is a wonderful way to showcase our school and facilities to high school students from around the country," she said. View the photo gallery here.

Amy Ansehl, D.N.P., FNP-BC, assistant dean and associate professor of public health practice, addressed a group of high school students on careers in health sciences including medicine, public health, speech-language pathology, physical therapy and nursing. The students were visiting NYMC as participants in Camp Neuro, a one-week day camp for students interested in exploring careers in medicine or psychology.

Ahd M. Mansour, a Ph.D. candidate student in the laboratory of Chandra Shekhar Bakshi, Ph.D., associate professor of microbiology and immunology, presented a poster, "Development of a Multivalent Subunit Vaccine Against Tularemia Using Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) Based Delivery System" at the 116th General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM Microbe) held in Boston on June 16-20. Her abstract was selected as the Outstanding Student Abstract which highlights exceptional students for their outstanding research efforts and is selected from all the abstracts submitted for this international conference.

 Shireen M. Pais, M.D., associate professor of medicine, has been elected governor of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) for the Southern New York region. She succeeds Brad Dworkin, M.D., professor of medicine, who served with distinction as ACG governor from 2010 to 2016.

Esther L. Sabban, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, presented an invited talk "Potential of Intranasal Neuropeptide Y for Preventing or Treating PTSD" at the "Neuropeptides in Brain Circuits Underlying Stress Perception and Response" symposium at the RegPep2016 meeting of the International Regulatory Peptide Society held on July 12-14 in Rouen, France.

Scott C. Schwartz, M.D., assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and director of the NYMC Psychoanalytic Institute and the Certification in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy certification course, was elected national secretary and membership chairman of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry (AAPDP). In 2011, the AAPDP created the Scott Schwartz Award in his honor for his dedication to young psychiatrists and mentorship of residents. The award is given annually to a medical student or a resident for the best original unpublished paper on psychoanalytic or psychodynamic psychiatry.

Chandra Shekhar Bakshi, D.V.M., Ph.D., assistant professor of microbiology and immunology, received a two-year $438,000 grant for "Preclinical Development of a Multivalent Tularemia Vaccine" from the National Institutes of Health.

Praveen Ballabh, M.D., professor of pediatrics and of cell biology and anatomy, received a one-year $352,188 continuation for "Germinal Matrix Hemorrhage Affects Glutamatergic Neurogenesis" from the National Institutes of Health.

An Huang, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of physiology, received a one-year $402,500 continuation for "Estrogen and EDHF in NO Deficiency" from the National Institutes of Health.

Marietta Lee, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, received a one-year $362,250 continuation for "Modification of DNA Polymerase Delta by a Novel Mechanism During Replication Stress" from the National Institutes of Health.

Petra Rocic, Ph.D., associate professor of pharmacology, received a one-year $410,000 continuation for "Regulation of Coronary Collateral Growth in the Metabolic Syndrome" from the National Institutes of Health.

Michael S. Wolin, Ph.D., professor of physiology, received $410,000 for the first year and $1,230,000 for three additional years for "Ferrochelatase and Guanylate Cyclase Regulation in Vascular Dysfunction" from the National Institutes of Health.

Thomas H. Hintze, Ph.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Physiology, received a $118,972 grant for "New Therapies in Pacing Induced Heart Failure - Compound 21" from Amgen.

Patric K. Stanton, Ph.D., professor of cell biology and anatomy, received a $250,000 renewal for "NMDA Glycine Site Modulation of Synaptic Plasticity" from Aptinyx Inc.

John T. Fallon III, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Pathology, received a $371,643 grant for "Sequencing for Infectious Disease Project" from Philips Healthcare.

Doris J. Bucher, Ph.D., associate professor of microbiology and immunology, received a one-year $956,604 renewal for "High Yield Reassortant Viruses for Influenza Vaccine" from the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations.
