Building the Touro College of Dental Medicine Clinical Training Facility − From the Inside Out
 Preparations for the January 2018 opening of the Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York Medical College (TouroCDM) state-of-the-art Clinical Training Facility are almost complete. General construction is scheduled to be substantially completed by the end of September, with finishing touches to be done by December. So far, there have been 3,000 panels of sheet rock, 112 miles of electrical wiring, 15 tons of air conditioning ductwork and 4,222 square yards of flooring installed, as well as 81 dental units and 220 dental cabinets.
Jerome D'Imperio, left, vice president of real estate construction, design and development at Touro, said that building this facility has been a "herculean task." Touro launched the project last winter by demolishing 50,000 square feet of abandoned office space on the third floor of 19 Skyline Drive. "The team, which has faced many obstacles, had to systematically dismantle every wall," said Mr. D'Imperio. The demo phase alone generated 23 tons of debris that had to be removed from the site. Noted Physiotherapist Shares His Views on Cultural Competence
 The School of Health Sciences and Practice Department of Physical Therapy hosted a talk by Raju K. Parasher, M.Sc., P.T., Ed.D., director/principal of the Amar Jyoti Institute of Physiotherapy, a college of the University of Delhi, India, on September 5. Dr. Parasher presented "Providing Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Services Across Three Continents: The Impact of Cultural Factors."
Dr. Parasher is a former associate professor in the School of Health and Medical Sciences at Seton Hall University and assistant professor in the Department of Biobehavioral Sciences at Teachers College, Columbia University. He shared his cross cultural experiences in providing physical therapy and educating physical therapy students in India, Sweden and the United States with an audience of physical therapy students and faculty of the School of Health Sciences and Practice. Founder of Achilles International Gives Inspirational Talk
 The School of Health Sciences and Practice Department of Physical Therapy welcomed Dick Traum, Ph.D., right, the founder of Achilles International, for a special lunchtime presentation on September 13. Dr. Traum, who was the first person with an amputation to run the New York City Marathon in 1976, gave an overview of the non-profit organization that encourages people with disabilities to participate in mainstream running, including its recent success with programs for veterans and children. The talk kicked off the countdown to the 19th Annual Race for Rehab on Sunday, October 8, coordinated by second-year physical therapy students to benefit Achilles International.

Carpenter, D.M.D., M.S., clinical assistant professor of dental medicine, has earned the Academy of General Dentistry 2017 Lifelong Learning and Service Recognition for his commitment to lifelong learning, volunteering his services to communities in need, mentoring associates and new dentists and participating in organized dentistry.

 Edmund F. La Gamma, M.D. '76, professor of pediatrics and biochemistry and molecular biology, presented "Transfusion-related acute gut injury (TRAGI): potential mechanisms and opportunities for prevention" at the fifth annual International Conference on Human Milk Science and Innovation (ICHMSI) held in Pasadena, Calif., September 6-8.
