HIGHLIGHTED RESOURCE
Youth Employment Program
Last month, it was announced that the Youth Employment Program would expand by $2.7 million. The Youth Employment Program through the Seneca County Department of Jobs and Family Services is a year-round program that reimburses businesses for wages of workers age 14-24, up to $10 per hour. It can be used by both for-profit and non-profit organizations. The program gives eligible youths the opportunity to develop a work history and current reference from an employer while earning a paycheck to help meet basic needs. Learn More
SUCCESS STORY
Seneca Medical invests in solar power
In the interest of environmental responsibility, Seneca Medical recently installed 121 kilowatt solar panel system. The approximately $500,000 project was placed on the roof of their 2011-12 expansion with a special racking system to angle the panels. Because of their size, the company did not qualify for a REAP Grant, which funds up to 25 percent of a solar project, however they did qualify for accelerated appreciation programs. While the installation is mostly about being green (Seneca Medical has been very involved in recycling), the company will see a return on their investment in several years. Other tax credits available for solar installations include the Solar Investment Tax Credit, a 30 percent federal tax credit for installing solar. Solar panels generally last around 35 years and can provide savings up to 95 percent on electricity costs. Learn More
