Greetings!

Pillot Le Montrachet
Le Montrachet at the Source!
The region of Burgundy, known for fickle weather and fairly wide variations year to year in weather and vintage style, has been on a bit of a tear lately. The 2009 and 2010 vintages are the latest successes - both great, yet stylistically very different from each other. 2009, with its power, depth and ripeness has largely come and gone, with a few late releases still to arrive.

On the opposite end of the greatness scale are the 2010's - a near perfect vintage in my opinion with wines that have a certain freshness, detail, purity, and expression of terroir, without any lack of good solid, concentrated fruit at their cores. And while I tasted through the 2011s and was pleasantly surprised with the wines, they are nowhere near the 2010s.

The press is in full swing, touting the year as great, and I can say I concur wholeheartedly. The only downside is that yields are lower, and that combined with demand is creating supply side problems and shortages. We have secured reasonably good quantities during our visits in January of 2011 and 2012, and my subsequent quick trip in May.

Attention Burgundy Lovers! We will be offering wines from our growers on a regular basis to the entire list, but if you have a deeper interest in this terrific year we encourage you to sign up for our Burgundy Report with more frequent notification of new arrivals.  Lamy Pillot 2010 Superb Wines from a Great Vintage

The lineup this year from Lamy Pillot is simply outstanding, from their value priced red and whitesLamy Pillot from Saint Aubin right up to Premier and Grand Cru, they deliver quality at a price that is very reasonable.  They own 19 hectares in and around Chassagne, the the family has been in the wine trade here since the 1700's. They have been farming without herbicides or pesticides since 1995, one of the first in Chassagne Montrachet to do so. On a recent visit in May, we spent time tasting each wine in the specific vineyard, an exercise that truly brought into focus the incredible impact just a few meters difference in location on the slope can make in the style and quality of each wine. Lamy Pillots' wines are terroir driven, with winemaking the same for each parcel with the exception of the Le Montrachet which sees all new oak (nut never shows it).  The results are pure, detailed, balanced and lovely wines that are a true expression of the specific soils and vineyards where they are grown. An excellent result in a great year from one of our top Domaines!

Saint Aubin Rouge 2010 Les Argilieres - $29.50 -  This is from the Argillieres lieu dit, and as thest aubin name implies there is more clay here in the soils. Located up in the top west end of the appellation at the bottom of the hill. Pure crushed cherry. Lively. Fresh. Lovely acidity and detailed fruit, bursting with bright succulent cherry tones. Beautiful! Drink now - 2016.

Chassagne Montrachet Rouge Les Boudriottes 2010 Premier Cru - $45  - This wine is a perennial
best seller and why not? Always pure and detailed, with good concentration, and in 2010, a detailedboudriotes fineness that is so typical of the vintage. Precise yet ample in fruit. Deeper. More crushed cherry. Solid. Good acidity. Long. Vg. still a little edgy, but my experience with Lamy's Boudriottes is that it quickly loses that edge a year or two out, and then gracefully ages and improves for a decade or more as it slowly transforms from vibrant fresh and lovely to pensive, complex and elegant.. Drink 2013-2020+. Drinks well young, lasts forever, great value! Classic.

Saint Aubin les Pucelles 2010 - $38 - This is one of the highest sites in the Appellation, a steepst aubin section at the very top of the appellation on the way to Rochepot. The wine in 2010 is pure and focused with lovely hints of  peach and yellow fruits, great mineral texture and acidity and a hint of ginger and pear. Superb wine - drink now - 2015.

Chassagne Montrachet Pot Bois 2010 -  $49  - This is located above the 1er cru Les Caillerets, and Daniel thinks the lower part could certainly have been considered for 1er Cru status. It always has a lovely, pure lemony crème note, good solid fruit core and laden with minerals. A beautiful wine that drinks like a Premier Cru but priced like a Village wine.  One of the best values in village Burgundy year in, year out. Drink now - 2018.

Chassagne Montrachet Le Grand Montagne 1er Cru 2010 - $69 - This site is high on hill just betweenmontagne En Virendot and La Romanee and above Grandes Ruchottes, separated by a little stretch of trees. Average vine age of Lamy Pillots parcel is 60 years. It's a tiny vineyard, and only 2 wineries bottle it people that I can think of, with Fontaine Gagnard being the other. Lovely citrus notes, bigger boned than Pot Bois, with another layer of complexity and concentration. Very classy, well built with good solid core, great acidity to balance, and a beautiful long finish, again with a wisp of ginger. This wine and the Caillerets are a perfect contrast in style - same Chassagne overarching character, same winemaking exactly, but totally different expressions. Vive le Terroir! Drink 2012 - 2020.

Chassagne Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru 2010 - $75 - This vineyard sits in the middle of thecaillerets appellation and the slope right on a fault line that leaves it two meters higher than Morgeaot just to its south. The difference is stunning, as the top layer of soil here is only about 20cm, laden with small stones (Caillerets) This is pure mineral - laser focused, intense and slightly lithesome and high strung - an Audrey Hepburn to the Grand Montagne's Brigitte Bardot. If you like your Chassagne on the racier side, this is your wine. Wow!
