Annual Independence Day Parade Kicks Off Friday, July 4, at 9:30 a.m.

Join the estimated 18,000 spectators lining the route for the annual The Kamm's Corners Independence Day Parade, stepping off at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, July 4. Organized by the Kiwanis Club of West Park for the past 24 years, the parade features community and civic groups, local celebrities, politicians, police, firefighters, and area merchants.

Participants must check in at the registration table in front of Gene's Place in Kamms Plaza for positioning, starting at 8:30 a.m. Kiwanis Club volunteers help line up all units. Streets will be closed to through traffic along the 2-mile parade route, which is roughly Lorain Avenue from the plaza going east to West Park Avenue and curving west to Rocky River Drive, returning south to the plaza off the drive.

The Parade Marshall this year is Dr. Neil Smith, President of Fairview Hospital. Singing the national anthem to open the event will be Eleni Nikolakis, a junior at John Carroll University and the daughter of Steve and Irene Nikolakis, operators of the Cretan Party Center, 3853 West 168th Street.

Grab a spot along the route and bring a bag to collect candy and other goodies going out to the crowd!

September Asphalt Cinema Is Added to Make Up for June's Rained Out Event

For only the second time in 12 summers, Asphalt Cinema was rained out. In June, continued rain and a forecast of thunderstorms shut down the event before it started. Monsters University will now be shown at a make-up date of Friday, September 12, at Impett Park, 3207 West 153rd Street, home of Asphalt Cinema.

Local merchants and non profit organizations provide games with prizes at 6:30 p.m. Then, our "Master Fun Facilitator" is on by 7:30 p.m. to engage everyone in learning a new dance step, keeping the beat with a rhythmic instrument, singing songs, painting self-portraits or characters from the film, and staying active, while the sky darkens for the outdoor movie.

On July 18, see Despicable Me 2. Click here for further details and the entire schedule.
