Indiana Pork Farmers Reach Goal of Donating One Million Meals to Indiana Food Banks
INDIANAPOLIS (Oct. 24, 2011) - Indiana pork farmers crossed the one million meal mark as part of their program to help feed hungry Hoosiers through a partnership with Feeding Indiana's Hungry - the statewide association of food banks. Launched in summer 2009, the Million Meals Program was started by Indiana Pork with the ambitious goal of providing one million ground pork meals to those in need. The million meal milestone was met this month with donations of pork products now totaling more than 250,000 pounds.
"We are so thankful to Indiana's pork farmers for their generosity toward meeting this goal. Protein is difficult for struggling families to afford, and the ground pork fulfills an important dietary component," said Emily Weikert-Bryant, executive director of Feeding Indiana's Hungry.
The first coordinated effort of its kind in Indiana, the Million Meals Program is a partnership between pork farmers, industry partners and the general public.
"Reaching this milestone was a combined effort of many partners all working toward a common goal of providing high quality protein meals to Indiana's hungry. As a pork farmer, I enjoy the opportunity to give back to the community, and if I can help people make the connection between the food they eat and agriculture, then that is an added bonus," said Sam Moffitt, president of Indiana Pork.
