Do I need a passport for domestic air travel starting January 2016?
Just after I sent the last email newsletter, the Department of Homeland Security issued new information.

Illinois-issued driver's licenses and ID cards will continue to be accepted through January 2018 as primary forms of identification to board commercial airplanes for domestic travel. The Department of Homeland Security is giving Illinois along with four other states an extension to bring their driver's licenses and state ID cards to certain federal standards.

If you do want to get a passport, Vernon Township issues them. Click here  for more information.

Consumer Alert - Increase in Phone Scams
Com Ed is warning customers of "sophisticated phone scammers" and "in-person" scammers who pose as ComEd representatives and request immediate payments.

Between November and December 2015, ComEd reported a 260-percent jump in phone scam attempts to small businesses and residential customers. These impersonators falsely claim that your electric service will be disconnected unless payment is made. Scammers ins truct customers to wire funds or buy a prepaid credit card and provide a personal identification number (PIN) or other personal information.

MC Squared Energy Services (mc²) and ComEd representatives will not call to ask you for cash or request that you purchase a prepaid credit card to make a payment on your bill.

If you have concerns about the status of your account, call ComEd's Customer Service line at 1-800-334-7661 (1-800-EDISON1). If you believe you have been the target of a phone scam, contact the Illinois Attorney General's office at 1-800-386-5438 (TTY 1-800-964-3013).

Township Officials Scholarship Opportunity
Sorry the link was broken in my last newsletter.

Each year since 1989, the Scholarship Fund has awarded scholarships to graduating high school seniors to continue their education at Illinois colleges/universities.  TOI staff checks all applications for the required elements (letters of recommendation, academic transcript, etc.) before presenting the complete applications to the Board of Directors Education Committee. Committee members establish a ranking system, and each Committee member ranks every application. The top seven this year will then be offered scholarships.

If you are interested in applying for a scholarship or finding out more information about qualifying, download the  2016 Scholarship Application
