Injury Proof Yourself
When we are active, relatively minor orthopedic injuries like tendonitis or sprained ankles are not uncommon.

Fortunately, more serious injuries, like broken bones, are rare but they can still occur.  The fear of an injury should never deter us from being active because the side effects of being sedentary are much more serious. Name any illness and inactivity promotes it.

There are things we can do to reduce the chances of these activity-related injuries.  This is of particular concern when the activity is something you love to do and you would like to keep doing. Activities like anything from Blast or Ride class, playing tennis, golf to just hiking with the kids.

A simple case of tendonitis can be so painful that it can prevent us from participating in many activities for months even years! Doing a little self-analysis and pre-therapy can often prevent injuries from occurring.

The first step is to analyze what muscles and what joints are involved in the activity. If it is a Blast class, for example, where you step on and off the bench a couple of hundred times during the class then obviously the knee joints, the ankle joints and joints in the feet are heavily involved.

The stronger the muscles that surround the joint are, the stronger the joint becomes. This effectively raises the breaking point of the joint and makes an injury less likely to occur.  When your strength is dramatically increased, the joint is much less likely to be injured.  And the bonus is all the tissue that surrounds and supports the joint, like the tendons, become stronger so tendonitis, for example, is much less likely to occur.  Another direct result is the bones also become stronger so that even the chance of a bone break is reduced.

It's a great investment of your time to take a few minutes and analyze the movements in your favorite activities, with the trainers'  help if necessary and start to  include the appropriate exercises into your weekly workouts  to prevent injuries before they interfere with your favorite activities!

What's New

Things are always changing! We have just added two new Technogym stretching machines to both clubs. They are the latest in stretching technology and allow full control over the stretching movements for both you hip flexors and the hip extensors.

In Poughkeepsie, we also installed the green cushioned Tarkett Sports floor in the small group and stretching area.  This is the same floor we have been using in the large group exercise room.  It is cushioned so it works for floor work and allows us to properly sanitize floor.

We also added an additional new Lifefitness leg extension machine and a Lifefitness Decline Bench to the free weight room.

We are always working to improve our facilities.  Helping you preserve your health and improve your fitness is our passion and always will be!

Back Pain? Let Us Help!

We understand that back pain can be debilitating.  When your back hurts, it is difficult to find a

comfortable position anywhere, whether you are moving, sitting, standing, or lying down.  And when your back hurts, the furthest thing from your mind is adding more movement.  At Mike Arteaga's Healthy Back and Neck Program, we understand these concerns are real.  We also know that movement is necessary in order for healing to take place.

Everything that we do in the MedX Healthy Back and Neck Program is based on what our members can do.  Each member goes through an initial assessment during which they help us determine the range of motion they feel most comfortable.  Once a range of motion is set, our members help us determine their strength levels through a series of test angles and with that information a training protocol is established for each individual.  The program progresses as individuals continue to gain strength.

It is important to understand that even when the range of motion is very limited, our program can still be beneficial and as the member gains strength and has a greater ability to move, we can continue to progress with gains in any range of motion.  Once again, please understand that everything we do in the MedX Healthy Back and Neck Program is based on what our members can do.

If you are suffering with back and or neck pain or know of someone who is suffering please call us for more information in Poughkeepise at 452-5050 or Highland 691-6161
