Diabetes Awareness by Melissa Coats, ND
November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. The statistics of this disease are alarming. There are nearly 30 million children and adults with diabetes in the U.S. and another nearly 90 million who are pre-diabetic and close to becoming Type II diabetics. Understanding diabetes and its connection with your diet are key to prevention.

There are two types of diabetes: Type I and Type II. Both involve your body's production of or sensitivity to insulin, a key hormone necessary for survival. Type I diabetes usually is diagnosed earlier in life; it occurs as a result of the body's inability to produce insulin due to an autoimmune response that damages the beta-cells of the pancreas. Beta-cells are the cells that secrete insulin. Type II diabetes is usually diagnosed after the age of 40 and is often associated with obesity, high blood cholesterol and triglycerides, and hypertension.

Turn up the Heat!
Nothing like adding a little "heat" to the holidays with a slow cook chili. Check out this recipe for 5-Ingredient Slow-Cooker Chili from Michelle Dudash, RDN, Cordon Bleu-certified chef and author of Clean Eating for Busy Families. You can also consider changing out the beef with ground turkey, and definitely add the avocado toppings for some quality fats.

Hezekiah Chinwah, MD has been practicing internal medicine with Innovative Primary Care since 2014.

Dr. Chinwah's biggest influence on his career has been personal research on other treatment modalities available in complimentary medicine. He received his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1975 and did his internship and residency with the Charles S. Wilson Memorial Hospital in New York. By 1979, he landed in Arizona to work as an emergency department physician with John C. Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix, now Honor Health. He has held numerous positions with hospitals, in private practice and other group practices.

His love for medicine grew gradually and peaked for him after reading "Food is Your Best Medicine" by Henry G. Bieler MD. He's most proud of the self-taught Medicine Certification in Acupuncture he received from UCLA (though is he not currently practicing this modality).

In his free time, Dr. Chinwah enjoys ping-pong, watching soccer, reading about advances in science and spiritualism.
