Meet Author Val Newton-Knowles

Allow me to introduce Val Newton- Knowles, author of No Shame! Only Power.

Your book has a high emphasis on the Holy Spirit. When did you first become aware of the Holy Spirit moving in your life?

Val: I became aware of the Holy Spirit moving in my life a couple of years ago as a young insecure teenager seeking to be good enough for everyone. I was a Christian, but very insecure. When I first shared at a youth meeting, the response was phenomenal and many young people who were facing the same struggles became free as a result. I realized then that God had a purpose and a plan for my life.

Do our personal experiences shape our ability to feel and respond to the Holy Spirit?

Val: Sometimes our personal experiences do shape our ability to feel and respond to the Holy Spirit. Sometimes those experiences can draw us to Him or away from Him. In my personal relationship with God, I seek to be in His presence everyday, through reading His word and prayer and meditation. There is a scripture that says "draw nigh to Him and He will draw nigh to you." I believe that no matter what personal experiences we encounter, as we all will, He is an ever abiding presence for us and it is during those times that He is there whether we feel Him or not.

Do you think it is possible to unintentionally resist the Holy Spirit?

Val: Yes. I believe we can unintentionally miss the Holy Spirit. It takes time to develop a relationship with the Father, and there have been times when we can miss Him. It's a part of our growth, and keeps our reliance and dependence on Him. One truth that I hold too, is that He always speaks in line with His Word. If we miss it, don't be discouraged. Continue in fellowship with Him and allow His voice and presence to become more clear to you.

What scripture do you cling to when you are feeling weak or ashamed?

Val: There are so many scriptures that I hold on to. But any scripture that talks about His love for me, are those I hold dear. Another favorite is, "Thou will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee." Isaiah 26:3

Thank you Val for visiting with us and sharing your thoughtful answers.

Dream Again by Heather Randall

Proverbs 29:18 "Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he."

Have you ever had a dream so big that it seemed impossible?

Abraham must have felt this way.

It may seem that Abraham has an unfair advantage over us. After all, he heard a promise from the voice of God insuring that his dream would become a reality.  Consider this: if our dream is God's will and we have sought Him and confirmed that, haven't we too been given that guarantee?

It's not just the promise that makes a dream work.   It's our faith in that promise, our commitment to keep moving in the right direction, our actions of taking the steps even when it looks like the dream is dead that matter.

In Genesis 15:5 God spoke to Abraham. It says "He took him outside and said, "Look up at the sky and count the stars-if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be."

This is an old man with a barren wife that God is speaking to, yet Abraham believes. He clutches that dream with all that he is.

Eventually God gives Sarah and Abraham a son, Isaac.

Twenty seven years later all of Abraham's hopes to build a nation as vast as the stars in the sky lay buried in a field that once belonged to Ephron the Hittite.

When Abraham's beloved wife dies he is put into the position many of us find ourselves in. He has to give up on the dream or dream again.

Abraham is tenacious and he makes the wise choice to dream again, sending his servant to seek out a bride for his son, Isaac.

That didn't mean the wait was over. There was still a plan and it took time to fulfill, but eventually a nation was born.

When your dream seems to be fading and the story seems over, keep looking to God. Be brave enough to dream again. The dream you thought you understood may take on a different shape. Keep trusting. Don't lose your vision. Keep the law. Take the steps. Seek out the next plan of action (make sure it's God's plan, not yours). Watch God make it happen. You will be happy.

This month is already shaping up to be a little crazy. Holidays and hospitality are a growing priority. You know what? I'm determining right now to be proactive, to seek out those quiet moments when my Heavenly Father whispers to me and sets my dreams in motion. Let's commit ourselves this month to battle the busyness and stay open to His inspiration.

Watching God Work,

 Heather Randall
