"For many [PACT program families], a place where they can freely explore is unfamiliar and even a luxury. Throughout the eight weeks, we get to be a part of how families open up to new experiences:  art becomes a way to play in order to find out things they didn't know about each other. Starting with only the humblest of materials: paint, paper, clay and scissors, they become artists in their own right, fluent and enriched with a new kind of vocabulary that reconnects them through creative pathways and maybe even some new traditions." ~ Dickson, long-time Free Arts Volunteer

July 11, 2012
Greetings!

One of the aspects of my work with Free Arts for which I am most grateful is the opportunity to feel and be connected to our community. I learn daily about agencies and organizations in Los Angeles that are launching new programs or dealing with complex social issues in innovative ways -- all with the goal of striving to improve the quality of life for the people who live here, and it inspires and challenges me.

I am always energized talking with Free Arts' staff and volunteers about ways to maximize the impact of our programs. Driving home the other day, I spent the entire ride thinking about various ways to make and design percussion instruments for a Free Arts Day, and reflecting on the careful thought and planning that goes into making a Free Arts Day run smoothly.

Like so many people living and working in Los Angeles, I have a rather lengthy commute. It always amuses me that Angelenos talk to one another in terms of time rather than miles when discussing travel -- on paper my 12.5-mile commute looks easy. I readily admit that the thought of adding 12 or 13 hours to my work week was not appealing, but I have been determined to use the time in the car to my advantage. I decided that the time would be well spent learning about things that interest me.

I have been listening to some fantastic lectures from The Teaching Company, and the series I completed last week on the lives of the great sages has given me a lot to think about. The final lecture ended with a quote from one of my favorite people, Albert Einstein. I'd like to share it: "A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty." At Free Arts, I am privileged to be part of a large circle of compassion, and I am thankful to our creative and committed volunteers and staff for being part of that circle.

Sincerely,

Shauna McClure

There is still time to sign up to be a part of Team Free Arts at the Long Beach International City Bank Marathon and Half Marathon, but you don't have to be a runner to contribute to the excitement!

As an official charity of the event, Free Arts is excited to be raising money and awareness through our  CrowdRise campaign. Now is a great time to make a donation and take advantage of the current contest. Now through July 29, raise at least $26 for a chance to win the running shoes of your choice. The full contest rules are here.

Helping Hands

How well do you know the Free Arts staff? This month, we would love to share some "FUN FACTS" with our readers and introduce some of the newest members of the Free Arts team:

Where were you born?

Justin, Programs Supervisor: "I was born in Vietnam and grew up on a rice patty farm. My brother and I escaped on a boat when I was eight, and we stayed at the refugee camp in Malaysia for about six months before we were sponsored into the United States."
Brigid, Director of Programs: "...in the booming metropolis of Tulsa, Oklahoma."
Judith, Courthouse Program Director: "Mexico City, Mexico."

What is your favorite day of the week and why?
Shauna, Executive Director:
"Oddly, I like Mondays. A fresh week -- new possibilities."
Trevi, Community Liaison: "I love Sundays. Sleep in, brunch, go to the beach, go to the farmers' market, get stuff done around the house...it's good for all of that. Plus, I've been going to Sunday night karaoke for years!"

Name a song you've had on repeat recently.
Audrey, Development Director: "Don't Worry, Be Happy"
Chloe, Intern: "'Say You'll Be There' by The Spice Girls. It wakes me up in the morning."
Lindsay, Operations Coordinator: "Songs from commercials always get stuck in my head. I'm currently obsessed with 'Ho Hey' by the Lumineers."

When you were a child, what did you want to
be when you grew up?Staff
Trevi:
"I had a list a mile long! I still do! Anything from artist to chef to travel writer to astronaut."
Justin: "I wanted to be an astronomer, but deep inside I always wanted to help people."
Lindsay: "I had dreams of becoming a Disney Princess...I knew real people sang for them in the movies."

Who is one person in history you would like to meet?
Brigid: "Anne Boleyn fascinates me. After reading several of her biographies, I have a long list of questions I'd love her to answer for me."
Judith: "I would love to have met Maria Montessori."

Where is your dream vacation spot?

Chloe: "I really want to travel through Europe and explore all the hidden cities and artistic relics."
Audrey: "Denali National Park."
Shauna: "A nice beach in Thailand."
