Integrity Florida applauds Gaetz, Weatherford for continued commitment to ethics reform

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (January 29, 2014) Integrity Florida took note of the following ethics reform commitments by Senate President Don Gaetz and House Speaker Will Weatherford as part of their Work Plan 2014 agenda in remarks during a Florida Channel broadcast of the 2014 Associated Press Legislative Planning Day:

  • Strengthen the garnishment provisions for public officials who don't pay their fines.
  • Require that local officials undergo ethics training just like the legislature has to annually and apply many of the same ethics requirements presently in place for lawmakers to local officials.
  • Hold statutorily created corporations, like Citizens Property Insurance Corporation and Enterprise Florida, and direct support organizations, like Visit Florida, to ethical standards that government organizations need to be held to.
  • Remove officials from office for failing to file financial disclosure reports.
  • Increase lobbying disclosure and registration throughout Florida's special districts.
  • Strengthen open records and open government laws.
  • Define clear and enforceable rules for residency requirements of public officials.

The complete remarks by President Gaetz and Speaker Weatherford on these ethics and open government reforms begin at 36:11 here.

"We applaud Senate President Don Gaetz and House Speaker Will Weatherford for their pledge to keep government accountable by continuing to improve ethics laws in 2014," said Dan Krassner, executive director of the nonpartisan government watchdog group Integrity Florida. "Especially after President Gaetz and Speaker Weatherford led a historic, bipartisan overhaul of Florida's ethics laws in 2013, their continued focus on solutions to make government more transparent and accountable is refreshing."
