Intersecting Planes

Opening: April 1, 2017, 5-8:30 PM
Exhibition Dates: April 1 - June 17
Carneal Simmons Contemporary Art
Dallas, TX

Carneal Simmons Contemporary Art is honored to present Modern works from the estate of American artist Duayne Hatchett (1925 - 2015), including select paintings, works on paper, and sculpture. The opening reception for Intersecting Planes  is  on Saturday, April 1, 2017 from 5:00 to 8:30 PM.

Duayne Hatchett received his BFA from the University of Oklahoma in 1950 and his MFA in 1952.  Hatchett developed a personal mode of expression that defines physical beauty and solicits a universal response. His work has encompassed a broad and diverse artistic spectrum, from the Mexican influenced printmaking and painting of the late 1940s to the found object junk metal sculpture of the 1950s and early 1960s, to the architectonic sculpture and minimalist painting of the 1960s through 1970s, and on to the abundant paintings, sculpture and printmaking of the last forty years. His unique visual language has been created through the ingenious manipulation of various materials, the  discovery of techniques and processes, and the invention of tools. This is work that conveys a powerful, clear, and unified expression of form, reflecting our environment specifically and generally. His artworks invite both interaction and contemplation, allowing us to unlock our memories and our senses through the act of observation.

His work has been exhibited and collected by art institutions throughout the world including the Michael C. Rockefeller Art Center, Fredonia, NY; Whitney Museum of American Art, NY NY; Philbrook Museum of Art, Tulsa, OK; Flint Institute of Art, Flint, MI ; The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, Japan; Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmand, VA; Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago, IL; Lowe Art Gallery, Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington DC; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY; Middelheim, Museum, Antwerp, Belgium; Milwaukee Art Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin;  Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburg, PA; Oklahoma City Art Center, Oklahoma City, OK; Krannert Art Museum, Champaign, IL; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN; Denver Art Museum, Denver, Colorado; Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, Texas.

Unraveling the Migration

Exhibition: Through April 8
Wichita Falls Museum of Art
Wichita Falls, TX

The Wichita Falls Art Museum exhibits the work of CSCA artist Sherry Giryotas in her show Unraveling Migration. Informed by her observations of the world of nature, and the influences of having lived on a variety of continents, her abstractions are landscapes of the mind.  As she explained to  Danny Bills, Curator of Collections and Exhibitions at the Wichita Falls Museum of Art,   "My work is not specific to a place or time but is an amalgamation of memories of shifting landscapes, urban mixed up with rural, melding together into a complex tapestry of images." This exhibition offers an unprecedented opportunity to examine the continuity and creativity of her art.

The exhibition continues through April 8, 2017 at the Wichita Falls Museum of Art at Midwestern State University.
