RE: Pre-conference Opportunity for Newly Hired Middle and High School
Administrators (June 25, 2017)
I write on behalf of the state conference planning committee to invite your newly appointed principals and assistant principals for the 2017-2018 academic year to attend a special meeting at the 90th Annual Virginia Middle and High School Principals Conference & Exposition –
Principal Leadership – Discover ’18
, June 25-28, 2017, at the Renaissance Portsmouth-Norfolk Waterfront Hotel, 425 Water Street, Portsmouth, Virginia. This meeting opportunity is limited to
new
principals and assistant principals registered to attend the state conference.
Specifically, we are planning for your new hires to meet during the pre-conference schedule on Sunday, June 25th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. so they can interact with each other and participate in a discussion led by experienced secondary public school leaders – Lawrence W. Lenz, former administrator in Culpeper, Buckingham, and Essex (now a school board member for Essex County), Carolyn F. Bernard, former middle and high school administrator in Chesapeake, and Eric V. Brent, former administrator in Prince William and now executive principal in Fairfax. In addition, panel members will include the 2017 Outstanding High School and Middle School Principals of Virginia and the 2017 Outstanding Secondary School Assistant Principal of Virginia. Among the topics to be addressed are the following:
- Problem solving
- School management
- Ongoing school self-review
- Teaching effectiveness
- Community relations
- Transition and change
We are hoping that some of the benefits your new hires will gain from attending Sunday’s pre-conference meeting will be guidance and support during their initiation into school administration, increased self-confidence, encouragement to take risks to achieve their goals, opportunities to discuss professional issues with a veteran, and promote statewide networking.
