July 8-18 Summer School Trip to Oxford
with Stephanie and Reagan Cocke
Informational Wine and Cheese Reception
Oxford in the summer is a great place to be: narrow cobbled streets, punts on the river, walks in the meadows, ancient halls of learning, international visitors, Shakespeare plays performed in college gardens, University ceremonies-- the "dreaming spires". And, set in the heart of Oxford, there is a Christian community, waiting to welcome us to its Summer School, this year entitled The Word and its Witnesses.
2011 marks the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Version of the Bible. Wycliffe will be celebrating this great publishing event by focusing on the Bible's history-from its first formation, through its various translations, to our task in the present day of spreading its message. Each day a variety of workshops will include Richard Baxter: The Reformed Pastor (1656); John Bunyan: Pilgrim's Progress (1678); J C Ryle: Holiness (1879); Dietrich Bonhoeffer: The Cost of Discipleship (1937); Contemporary Discipleship; and Exploring Tolkien's Works. Afternoon tours will include The Kilns (C S Lewis' home); Blenheim Palace; and a Walking Tour of Christian Oxford.
In the evenings we will have time to explore Oxford's restaurants and old-fashioned pubs or attend a music concert or open-air performance. We will be based at the Mercure Eastgate Hotel, a fully renovated converted coaching inn where both CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien stayed. Our trip will include a visit to Hampton Court Palace and the largest flower show in the world, the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. We will end our trip with two nights in London, staying at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel in Kensington.
