Craftsmen

NNWDC LogoWDC has a rich legacy as one of the founding groups of what became America's Studio Movement. The Studio Movement is what the Arts & Crafts Movement evolved into after mass manufacturing won out over hand-crafted production. I am proud to be a member of this historic group that is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of contemporary art, while upholding the heritage of the hand-crafted in an over mechanized world. I am honored to be in the company of an amazing group of artists and craftspeople.

Roycroft Renaissance LogoAs a Master Artisan of the Roycroft Renaissance, I have the honor and distinction of working to uphold an important part of America's artistic legacy, as well as the responsibility to keep alive the spirit of art as manifested throughout the ages. It is a rare opportunity and I see it as a great responsibility.

 Important Influences

Barbara and I have many important influences in our lives and people who are a regular source of inspiration. Depending on the circumstances, the people we cite may vary.  But today we recognize a most special influence and person in both of our lives.

Today is the 92nd birthday of Barbara's maternal grandmother, Harriet Eastman Powers. Barbara has been very close to her grandmother her entire life. From an early age, she would leave her parents and sister to spend full summers at her grandparent's house in the mountains of North Carolina. It seems she was always by her grandmother's side.

Barbara's mountain summers were spent working in her grandparents' green houses, and on weekends, going to every yard sale in Ashe County collecting "junk" (as it was referred to by others).  Today our house is filled with many of those treasures Barbara and Harriet bought at their yard sales (in addition to the family pieces that have been passed down to us over the years). We consider ourselves lucky to have a house full of special things that remind us daily of all of the important people in our family.

Not long after Barbara and I started dating I met her grandparents. They quickly accepted me into the family, and I have a great relationship with Harriet. Over the years, she has shared the many stories attached to all of the family treasures she has given to us. The most special is the quilt she made for me by her own hands!

We hope you take time to reflect on the important people in your life.

Happy Birthday Harriet and A Great Spring to you all!

Stillness Article
"
Stillness"
by CJ Hurley

"What many of us could use in our lives right now is stillness.

Stillness is the quiet restfulness of the contemplative - harmony, if you will - that allows escape from the mind-numbing sensory overload of the technological world.

What I call stillness is what Arts & Crafts progenitor John Ruskin called repose, what he considered the ingredient essential to calling something a work of art. Because the ultimate work of art in the Arts & Crafts Movement was the home, it was imperative that it carried the qualities of repose - that it moved the human spirit, stirred deep emotions, and brought about an all-encompassing tranquility."

Kitchen Revival Tour

We are thrilled to have a project included on Portland's 15th annual Kitchen Revival Tour!

The Architectural Heritage Center is gearing up for its annual Kitchen Revival Tour in April. The tour, celebrating its 15th anniversary, spotlights kitchens that are in original, or near to original condition, and ones that are sensitively remodeled to fit the history of their respective homes.

The event is a great way to catch a glimpse into the vintage homes of Portland, and take away ideas for finding balance between keeping your own kitchen a functional historic workroom of old, and servicing modern lifestyle needs, while remaining sensitive to the historic integrity of your vintage home.

The annual tour is very popular with old house lovers in the Portland area, but is also a destination for many people around the country. We have learned that some people regularly plan their vacations to Portland so they can attend this great house tour!

Saturday, April 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Eight kitchens ranging from the late-Victorian period of the1890's through the Mid Century period of the 1950's.
