IPSWICH have rolled the dice and come up winners in bizarre conditions at the weekend.

Up against Wynnum Manly in the BRL preliminary final, the Ipswich Jets were unsure whether the game would go ahead as torrential rain descended on Emerson Park.

Putting the vote to his players, Jets coach Mark Bishop elected to take the field despite the risk of further storms.

"I haven't seen anything like that in a long time," Bishop said of the conditions.

"The rain was coming sideways and there was about two inches of water across the whole field.

"With the grand final next week they didn't really have much option to replay it so I asked the boys what they wanted to do.

"They all said we want to play."

Needing a win over the minor premiers to book a grand final clash with Redcliffe, the defending premiers put their season on the line as soon as they took the field.

"The risk was that if Wynnum scored first and another storm hit that the game would be called off and they would win," Bishop said. "Then they scored early and I thought to myself here we go."

The Seagulls would score twice through winger Liam Clark and second-rower Brad Mana to take a 12-0 lead over Ipswich.

With pressure mounting as time wore on, the Jets dug deep in the second half as they fired back to a 16-12 lead in the final minutes.

Tries to Lachlan Roe, Max Felosi and Mitch Koina brought the defending premier back from the brink with sharpshooter Josh Damen adding the extras.

"The weather didn't help our footwork but we just backed our own style," Bishop said.

"When Wynnum got the lead it probably steeled their resolve to just kick their way out of trouble and take the ball up through the middle.

"We knew that was how they were going to play and the boys stuck to their guns and defended their line."

Surviving four repeat sets on their own line and a disallowed try in the final minutes, the victory means the Jets now face a grand final clash with the Redcliffe Dolphins.

With a chance to win back-to-back premierships, Bishop admitted the excitement was starting to build down at North Ipswich Reserve.

"It was always the goal at the start of the year to be in the grand final," he said.

"We haven't really spoken about it too much because we want to focus on each game ahead but now that we are there.

"The boys are all getting excited but they know how to look after themselves.

"They don't need me to reinforce what next week means.

"Any grand final is a big win for the club and it's up to us to try and create another bit of history for these guys who are playing."

The grand final will be played from 3.30pm on Saturday at Bishop Park.

Jets Buzz with Michael Nunn
THE Jets' BRL assistant coach is Stu Neuendorf. Stu runs the water for Mark Bishop and I got him to run me a beer so we could have a chat before the Jets big BRL game this week.

What year did you start at the Jets? First started following Jets in parental role in 2013 watching my son play, began working for Jets in 2015 as assistant coach for BRL team.

What is your role? Assistant coach to Bisho, water runner for BRL team. I do a pre-game warm up for BRL and referee opposed sessions at training for all teams.

Favourite Jet to watch? It's hard to pick one favourite. Chris Ash is such a competitor. Pete Whittaker is electric, beginning to learn just how good he is. Rowan Winterfield always gives 100% and Nemani Valekapa, I respect the commitment he gives to every game and together we solve the problems of the world as we travel to training together every week.

Favourite NRL player? Cameron Smith. The way he can control a game is incredible.

CEOs Report

A 2016 Premiership is still on the cards for the Ipswich Jets after an upset win over the minor premiers, Wynnum Manly on Saturday. It was a tough day for a preliminary final as the torrential rain flooded the fields just before play was due to commence.

Even though the field was looking like a swimming pool, both teams took the field to fight for their spot in the Grand Final.

It was our boys who played a massive second half comeback to defeat the minor premiers and knock them out of contention for the title.

A massive thank you to the Valleys Diehards for providing us with your field and facilities for the game. Also, we would like to congratulate the Women's Burleigh Bears team for their win against Beerwah in their semi final.

At most fields, rain like this would usually result in a cancelled game. However, due to great council work, drainage and dedication to the field we were able to continue.

The BRL team will be looking to secure a second premiership in a row after winning the 2015 season. The Grand Final will be at Bishop Park on Saturday at 3.30pm. We hope to have a great turn out of green and white as we take on the Redcliffe Dolphins for the last game of the season. We hope it's a great one!

Congratulations to all of our players, supporters and staff for a great year and we can't wait to begin the next season.

The club is well advanced in our planning for season 2017 and are interested to hear from any businesses who would like to have their brand associated with the Ipswich Jets. A big thank-you to those sponsors who have already committed themselves to supporting the Ipswich Jets in season 2017.

BRL Report

Well the BRL boys certainly put on some nail biting football on Saturday in another, extremely tight game with Wynnum Manly Seagulls. The Preliminary Final was held at Emerson Park on the weekend but after the torrential rain, it was more looking like a lake. However, both teams decided to continue with the days events and play out the game in the wet, muddy conditions.

Our Jets style of play wasn't working well in the rain and we were down 12-4 after the first half. In a great comeback, the second half brought two tries and a penalty field goal to get us above the Seagulls 16-12.

We managed to hang on and defend our small lead down until the buzzer sounded at full time. The Jets are now off to the Grand Final this Saturday after winning 3 knockout rounds.

Congratulations to the boys so far and good luck against the Redcliffe Dolphins this weekend.
