Robin's Roundup
Dear Later Moms:
We're gearing up in my household for spring break and a family trip to Las Vegas, so I'm glad we're able to get you this issue before I skip town.
Happy Mother's Day, in advance, to all of you! If you're looking for a special gift for yourself or a mom in your life, check out our Bloom necklace below. You deserve it. We also have some fun and original items in our MLTS Shop.
If you're in NY or planning a trip, I'd love you to join me on May 23rd when I speak at the M.O.M. Conference about Age as an Asset: Life in the Later Mom Lane. I'm excited to be in the company of some inspiring and creative thinkers, authors, academics, etc. It will be a good time! It is the brainchild of Joy Rose, our featured later mom this month.
Warm regards,
Robin

Later Mom in the Spotlight
Joy Rose
The MediaMom
In 1997, ten days after the birth of my daughter, I was admitted to the emergency room with SLE (LUPUS) and hospitalized for a month. That was the beginning of saying goodbye to my 'old life' and hello to a new one...the new debilitating diagnosis at 37, may have made me an 'older mother' but also someone who was much too young to be as sick as I was. I spent the next several years on chemotherapy to treat the LUPUS and in and out of hospitals. LUPUS is an autoimmune disease the can affect the organs. In my case I went into renal failure and needed a kidney transplant.

Missing Them Now
By Laura Houston
Writer, MLTS Blogger & NY Chapter Member
They say it goes by so fast. It doesn't feel that way most days. Especially this winter when I was trapped inside with them on so many long, endless, boring days. Yes. That's right. I said boring. Sometimes I find motherhood boring. Not often. But here in New York City where getting anywhere with two toddlers is a pain in the ass, I tend to give in and stay inside rather than face the freezing wind and icy playgrounds. After their naps, we go into the living room where I lie on the rug and watch the sun move across the floor while the boys fight over a toy, and I work hard to stay in the moment. I practice patience. I tell myself I won't be here forever.

Differently Abled: The Power of Words
By Gigi R. Khonyongwa-Fernandez

I personally hate the word "disability," which is why I purposely put it in quotation marks whenever I write it. My distaste for this word developed long before my precious son Alejandro entered this world unexpectedly in my 24th week of pregnancy; before he developed severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in the NICU which left him legally blind in both eyes; and, well, before he was labeled with significant global developmental delays, complex medical and surgical history, and vision loss.

Watching for Signs
By Amy Wall Lerman
Baby Bloomer Editor & N. NJ MLTS Chapter Head
When my son was about a year old he started to flap his hands over his ears like he was trying to block something out. I knew it wasn't because of noise - it was because something was upsetting him. For me, it was a trigger that something could be wrong. Sounds ridiculous right? I know...I'm a helicopter mom, a worry-wart, a hypochondriac, you name it... I thought it. But no matter how much other moms told me not to worry, what they didn't know, and I couldn't be completely sure of at that time, is that Autism is in my genes.

Later Mom Testimonial

My husband and I waited a long time to have our baby. That was by choice. Although, I was told it would never happen, I would never get pregnant. The good news is that the doctors were wrong. We have a beautiful 11 year old named Tess. My miracle baby, conceived, "au natural." When I was a teenager, I began to get death defying pain with my period every month, on par with labor pains - literally! It was a nightmare. But back then I was told I was normal. I was silenced with pain killers and told to go live my life.
