International Education in Stark County, Ohio
Over 40 years ago
the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme was established to provide a challenging and comprehensive education that would enable students to understand and manage the complexities of our world and build the skills and attitudes needed for taking responsible action. "The IB aims to inspire a lifelong quest for learning hallmarked by enthusiasm and empathy."[1]
The intention is to develop the capacity of students to be critical thinkers, risk takers, influencers and innovators. IB has four programmes from preschool through high school. Stark County hosts the high school Diploma Programme.[2]
Plain Local School District is in year one of the two-year application process to begin an IB program.
Currently, there are over 100 students from Jackson, North Canton and Perry participating in a collaborative IB Diploma Programme hosted by Jackson Local Schools. Students aged 16 to 19 participate in a demanding two-year curriculum leading to final examinations and a qualification that is welcomed by leading universities around the world. Kacy Carter, Jackson High School Assistant Principal and IB Coordinator shared,
"The advantage of the IB program is that students are more prepared for their college experience because of the rigor and work load. This helps them stand out when seeking college scholarships, jobs and apprenticeships since the program forces a student to prove they are well-rounded, committed to rigor and leaders in service to the community."
