Reducing the Burden of College Debt

Contrary to most of our beliefs that college debt is an inevitable burden, over the last few decades a series of federal laws signed under both Republican and Democratic administrations, created a little known opportunity for students to borrow directly from the United States Department of Education with an Income-Based Repayment plan (IBR). The details of the IBR have changed over the years, but in short, the law provides a mechanism for adjusting repayment based on the income level of graduates. College graduates pay back their federal loans at no more than 10% of their adjusted income per month and the loans are forgiven after 20 years.

"College degrees pay off in the long run, but many graduates struggle to manage their debt upon graduation," said Rory O'Sullivan, deputy director of Young Invincibles, a millennial research and advocacy group. "Income-based repayment plans protect students from early career struggles, layoffs and tough economic times." [1]
