Aultman College Online Course Earns Prestigious Quality Certification
Aultman College's course, Intro to Sociology, received a perfect score and has been nationally recognized with the Quality Matters certification for best practices in online learning design. Homeless Students Face Many Barriers
Homelessness profoundly impacts students and affects virtually every school district in Ohio.
The federal
McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act
defines a homeless student as one who lacks a "fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence." In practice, homelessness can range from abandonment to living in cars, trailers, shelters, or sub-standard housing.
All districts must work to ensure that
homeless students have access to, and succeed
at, public
education.
Urban districts are particularly hard-hit when it comes to homelessness. According to the
Consolidated State Performance Report, a
tota
l of 14,757 children/youths from Ohio's "Big 8" urban districts have been served under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Children and Youth Program.

The purpose of McKinney-Vento sub-grants offered through the Ohio Department of Education is to
"
to ensure that all children and youth have equal access to the same free and appropriate public education, including preschool education as non-homeless children and youth...remov(ing) barriers to enrollment, attendance and success in school." The sub-grants recognize districts that
"have developed programs that go above and beyond the requirements of the law" in removing barriers. Canton City is one such district, receiving $150,000 for fiscal year 2016.
