The Stark Advantage: Our BIG SIX

"Energy and persistence conquer all things." - Benjamin Franklin

Stark County has six colleges - the "Big Six" - of higher learning within its boundaries:  four private institutions  (Aultman College; Malone University
University of Mount Union; and Walsh University) and two public ( Kent State University-Stark; and Stark State College). Close to a third of Stark's high school graduates attend a college/university in Stark County. From these institutions a student may earn a certificate, an associate degree, a bachelor's degree, a master's degree and/or a PhD.

Ohio wants to have 65% of its workforce (ages 25-64) hold a postsecondary degree or credential by 2025. Meeting that goal is becoming more and more of a possibility. In fact, Stark County ESC districts[1] saw a 4% increase in the percentage of graduating seniors attending college in the fall immediately following graduation - 60% for the Class of 2017 and 56% the previous year.[2]

According to the National Student Clearinghouse Student Tracker, 73.8% [3]  of students nationally persisted from freshman to sophomore year in college (starting as freshmen in the fall of 2015). Locally, 84% of greater Stark County residents persisted into their sophomore year in college.

Stark is gaining ground as our students enroll in college and persist past the first year. We, as a community, must continue to support our youth and families as they navigate the systems of education and the new economy. It's full steam ahead to success!
