Stark Schools Continue Proactive Approach to Bullying Prevention

In a national survey, approximately 20% of youth in grades 9 to 12 reported being bullied on school property and 16.2% reported being cyber-bullied within the past year.[1]

Twenty-nine Stark County public and parochial schools - impacting over 11,000 students - have implemented bullying prevention through the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program[2]. Support for Olweus comes from the Stark County Educational Service Center with funding from Sisters of Charity Foundation, the Stark Community Foundation, and Walter K. and Wilda E. Bortz Fund.

An interim evaluation of Stark's 2013-14 program reveals a reduction in the percentage of students "telling no one" that they have been bullied at schools in year two of implementation and a reduction of reported bullying in the parochial elementary schools over two years. Focus groups have contributed to a better understanding of "cyber-bullying," how it is perceived by teachers and parents, and the role it is playing in the lives of Stark County students.
