JUNE 2016 NEWSLETTER
We work with a wonderful array of community groups to help achieve our mission. Below, we highlight a few of these partnerships and how together, we help thousands of animals each year.

Through Paws in Stripes, puppies spend six weeks at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham learning how to be a great dog. The dogs are housed directly in the cells with their handler, making housebreaking a priority. Weekly obedience classes are taught on site by AWS staff. By observing and participating in these classes, the handlers learn training methods that they reinforce daily with their charges. The pups even get to play together in the yard, where they run in the grass and say hello to everyone. Being exposed to this new environment with its many new faces helps the puppies learn crucial adjustment and social skills.

Paws in Stripes is a win-win-win for everyone involved -- the puppies, the prison inmates and the adopters!

Canine Community Corps (CCC) is a non-profit based in Southern Maine. Their mission is to promote rescue, dignity and service among military veterans, prison inmates and shelter dogs. Through prison programs and weekly classes, CCC trains rescue dogs as emotional support or therapy animals. The dogs, in turn, help wounded veterans regain their independence and assist other veterans in need. We are so proud to partner with CCC as an adoption center for veterans in our community.

AWS Executive Director Abigail Smith serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Canine Community Corps.

Pets and Women to Safety (PAWS) is one of our longest running community programs. In conjunction with Caring Unlimited, York County's domestic violence resource organization, we provide temporary shelter for the pets of individuals fleeing domestic violence situations. This important program provides peace of mind for the individuals staying at Caring Unlimited's shelters, knowing their pet is safe from harm.

The women in the Southern Maine Re-entry Program at the York County Jail are tireless volunteers. From moving crates to assembling Kuranda beds, from unpacking donations to playing with puppies and kittens, there is nothing these volunteers can't do to help our animals.

Located on the grounds of AWS on Holland Road, the Kennebunk Community Garden is a wonderful enterprise for local gardeners. We are grateful for the donations of fresh greens the gardeners produce all summer long for our small animals!

Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are some of our more ardent supporters. In addition to attending our Humane Education programming, local troops organize collection drives to bring in funds and supplies for shelter pets. Scouts advocate for animals in their own communities and they volunteer to help us in many ways.

Members Girl Scout Troop 2157 from Biddeford were a huge help at the AWS booth at Kennebunk's May Day Festival. They helped with the children's crafts and showed off the puppies available for adoption.

Josh, a member of Scout Troop 39 in Scarborough, organized 19 volunteers to help build eight feral cat shelters. The project is a requirement for the rank of Eagle Scout and is used to demonstrate leadership of others while performing a project for the benefit of the community. Cat shelters certainly benefit the community! They are used on properties with feral cat colonies to ensure they have a warm, safe place to rest - to protect them from predators and the elements. There will be a lot of warm cats this fall and winter thanks to Josh's hard work and generosity!
