Saturday, June 6 and  Saturday, June 13

FREE!

On the Saturdays of June 6th and 13th from noon to 6:00 p.m., residents and visitors can enjoy the 5th Annual Hamilton Heights / Sugar Hill Cultural Festival and Pinkster Marketplace in one of Manhattan's most beautiful and well-preserved historic neighborhoods in West Harlem.

Named after a Dutch religious holiday, "Pinkster" was a day for African Americans in the early 19th Century to gather with family and friends and celebrate spring renewal. Appropriate for this newly revitalized neighborhood, this year's festival on 142nd Street between Amsterdam and Hamilton Place will include DJs and a full line up of live music performances featuring internationally acclaimed jazz vocalist Whitney Marchelle Jackson, the musician, artist and writer Marjorie Eliot and guitarist/singer/prodigy musician, Solomon Hicks. Other highlights include Artisan Row, showcasing unique crafts and artwork, a Children's Corner packed with activities, walking tour highlighting some of Hamilton Heights unique spaces, and open house for galleries.

This is a community gathering for families and kids, the creative and arts community, residents and visitors. Bring your instruments and jam with other musicians, join the Swing and Salsa dance sessions, dress your doggie/pooch and perhaps we will have a fashion show with prizes! Come and celebrate with your neighbors and meet new friends!

Jacquie Bird -
I love shapes. As a choreographer, as a dancer, as a singer, as a writer. It's all about the shape of something. As a singer, how does the sound shape from me to the audience? As a dancer, it's all about shapes & creating pictures. As a writer, I shape the story from my inner eye to my reader. I feel the same way as a jewelry artist--it's about how I choose & create the shapes to contour to one's body, to accent one's essence.

Ella Murray -
I am a textile visual artist creating woven designs for apparels and accessories. Ella Murray is recognized by The Smithsonian Institute in the African American Design Archive, in Textiles & Weaving and has been a member since 1996. My mixed-media jewelry is one-of-a-kind. The handbags are made with upholstery and different fabrics. My collection is very eclectic and vast.

Valerie Deas -
I am a Mixed Media artist with a history of teaching: painting, print making, sculpture, book art, drawing, and fiber art (quilting). I have exhibited domestically as well as internationally.

Zola Dube -
Raised in New York, Zola Dube comes from a matrilineal line of traditional healers from KwaZulu, South Africa. It was during Zola's introduction to Zulu healing and knowledge systems in KwaZulu that she learned the principles of Ubuhlalu "beadwork". Along side master beaders, Zola also learned the underlying meaning of bead colors, layout and design.

Zola Dube's handmade Ubuhlalu "beadwork" applies traditional artisan techniques to create contemporary as well as traditional wearable art. Zola Dube's work has recently been featured at the Baltimore Museum of Art and MoCADA.
