Summer Learning Fun

Summer shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially when it comes to reading. Studies show that most students experience a  loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read actually gain skills. During the summer parents can help children sustain (and even bolster) reading skills, strengthen their vocabulary and reinforce the benefits of reading for enjoyment. Remember that children need free time, away from structured academic learning, and the summer is the perfect time to relax and enjoy the pleasures of childhood. So summer reading should be fun
Intellectual Disability

A recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling clarifying what constitutes intellectual disability also marked a major milestone in efforts to put an end to use of the term "mental retardation."

The Supreme Court's move to follow suit marks what may be the last major national institution to adopt language that self-advocates have been urging for decades.

"Getting the name change in the eyes of the court is kind of the last step in a 25 year process to affirm the dignity of people with
"intellectual disability," said Peter Berns, CEO of The Arc.

The Importance of Siblings

The role of sibling to a person with any kind of disability is complex as as it inspiring!  In any family, each sibling, and each relationship that siblings have, is unique, important, and special. Brothers and sisters influence each other and play important roles in each others lives. Indeed, sibling relationships make up a child's first social network and are the basis for his or her interactions with people outside the family (Powell & Ogle, 1985).
Here are some sibling stories:

Hunter Candee  carried his little brother, Braden,on his back to raise  awareness about cerebral palsy.

The "Queen Jenny" celebrates the relationship between brother James and his older sister Jenny.

You tube video of a sister sharing about her life with her brother who has a disability.

Frequently Asked Question

"What are the benefits of standards based IEP's?"

The Individualized Education Program (IEP) is the key contract and plan for every student who receives special education services. But not all IEPs are created equal. Over the last decade, the IEP has been evolving. Some states now use a standards-based IEP, which is clearly linked to the grade-level curriculum and expectations for all students, per the state academic content standards. The standards serve as a framework for teaching and telling teachers what to teach but not how to teach it. Some states have complex standards for each grade level, while other states have less specific requirements.
