TBT: Milwaukee Avenue Used To Host A 25-Mile Bike Race Every Year
Starting in 1886, cyclists gathered every Memorial Day for a 25-mile competitive bike race along Milwaukee Avenue, leading from northwest suburban Wheeling down to the city's West Side.
And the avenue - which today  funnels thousands of two-wheeled commuters each day - wasn't such friendly terrain for bicycles in the 19th century.

Northwest Chicago Historical Society board member Frank Suerth explains, " Milwaukee Avenue [was] not the Milwaukee Avenue that one knows of today but a dirt road with ruts and other obstacles. Just a half-mile from the start of the race, riders had to "narrow down" for the bridge over the creek flowing into the Des Plaines River. Riders unable to "narrow down" due to the crowded participants on the bridge made a wet detour."

Rupp, Hasay, Samuelson Among American Runner Field at Chicago Marathon
The Bank of America Chicago Marathon announced today that two-time Olympic medalist Galen Rupp and American marathon debut record holder Jordan Hasay will lead a deep field of American contenders at the 40th annual Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Adding an exclamation point to the elite athlete field, 1984 Olympic gold medalist and 1985 Chicago Marathon champion Joan Benoit Samuelson will toe the line in an attempt to set an age group world record.
"Galen and Jordan are huge talents who have the ability to capture podium finishes. The last time we had an American male and female place in the top three together was 1996. And we have a deep field of Americans who can shake things up this year Luke Puskedra, Diego Estrada, Sam Chelanga, Sarah Crouch, Becky Wade and Alia Gray, to name a few," said Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski.

"And Joanie is a legend. To have Joan attempting a record in Chicago allows us the opportunity to celebrate her as an American icon and running legend."

Bike Safety, Skills Development for Young Cyclists
Helping your kids become safe, confident cyclists is one of the best things that a parent can do for their active children.  Kids love bike riding and the feeling of independence that comes from the ability to get to school or a friend's house under their own power. It can be a life-long source of fun and fitness.

Cycling is an incredible way to be active, see your neighborhood, bond with friends and have memorable family adventures.  Help it to be a safe hobby by giving your kids the skills to ride safely.
