March 2022 Edition

Hello Friends,

Spring is here and the Rebuilding Together Montgomery County team, board and volunteers are springing into action! We’ve recently completed critical home repairs for our 96th client family this fiscal year and we are on pace to hit our goal to serve 150 vulnerable families by June 30th. We held a successful National Rebuilding Day Kickoff Breakfast this month to help us gear up for National Rebuilding Weekend on April 29/30 and May 1, where we’ll have 700+ volunteers fan out across the county to help 25 families in need.

Please mark your calendar for other upcoming events:

She Builds with ABC Metro Washington is June 10th, and the Women Building Washington committee members will be out in force to support the families served at Stepping Stones Shelter in Rockville.

Cheers to Volunteers, a fun-filled BBQ event to celebrate our volunteers and partners, will take place on June 2nd at Smokey Glen Farm in Gaithersburg.

RTMC Annual Golf Tournament planning is in full swing for our October 3rd tournament at Bretton Woods Golf Course in Germantown. All funds raised will help provide critical home repairs for our clients.

As always, we are so grateful to you for your steadfast support of our mission. Together, we are helping to preserve affordable housing and making a tangible difference for our Montgomery County neighbors in need.

All the best,

Thank you Flower Hill Starbucks!

We are very grateful for our partnership with the Flower Hill Starbucks, located across the street from our office. In addition to keeping the RTMC staff caffeinated year-round, the store generously donated coffee for our recent NRD Kickoff Breakfast for our volunteers to enjoy. Special thanks to Store Manager Bart Delima and his entire team for their support of RTMC. If you're in the Flower Hill area, make sure to stop by and grab a coffee!

AmeriCorps Week

In March we celebrated #AmeriCorpsWeek. Each year, 250,000 Americans participate in AmeriCorps programs to build the capacity of organizations dedicated to giving back and strengthening the resiliency of our communities. Here at Rebuilding Together Montgomery County we are fortunate to have two amazing AmeriCorps members serving with us. Thank you to Karen Kozopas, AmeriCorps Client Outreach Coordinator, and Beki Mitiku, AmeriCorps Volunteer Coordinator, for all you do to support our organization and ensure that our neighbors in need can continue to live in safe and healthy homes.

Homeowner Stories: Our Neighbor, Mr. P.

Leslie Plummer Portrait.jpg

RTMC homeowner Mr. P.

Mr. P. grew up in Montgomery County and has resided in his current home in Gaithersburg for more than 50 years. Mr. P. lived through segregation in Montgomery County, and recalled the challenges and indignities of his early life. He is passionate about continuing to break down racial barriers in our society and ensuring the equality of all of our neighbors, in Montgomery County and beyond.

The volunteers of Neelsville Presbyterian Church completed life-changing work at Mr. P.'s home. Mr. P. has tried to purchase homeowner's insurance multiple times over the years, but he was refused each time due to his front entrance not being up to Montgomery County code and considered a safety hazard. Volunteers built new steps and a railing leading up to the front door of the home, bringing it up to code and allowing Mr. P. to finally purchase homeowner's insurance. Volunteers also installed several accessibility modifications in the bathroom, including grab bars, to ensure Mr. P. would continue to be able to shower safely. They replaced weatherstripping, installed new outlets and breakers, and repaired damaged drywall throughout the home. All of Mr. P.'s windows were very old and drafty, and in a huge undertaking, volunteers replaced 10 of them, ensuring that Mr. P.'s home will remain warm and comfortable for years to come. Mr. P. is extremely grateful for the dedication and compassion shown by the Neelsville volunteers throughout the repairs process. Thank you to all the Neelsville volunteers for your hard work to help keep Mr. P. safe and healthy in his home!

National Rebuilding Day (NRD) Kickoff Breakfast

Group leaders, longtime volunteers, and RTMC staff at our NRD 2022 Kickoff Breakfast

Thanks to all of our fabulous volunteers who came out for our National Rebuilding Day (NRD) Kickoff Breakfast! This year, we will have 32 corporate and faith-based teams (700+ volunteers!) who will fan out across Montgomery County to help 25 families in need of critical home repairs on NRD Weekend: April 29, 30 & May 1st. The Kickoff Breakfast was an opportunity to get our team House Captains, Home Ambassadors, and Volunteer Coordinators together and to provide training and reflections from RTMC staff and long-time RTMC volunteers.
