  2013 new GS year

Happy New Girl Scout Year!

October 1 marks the start of a new Girl Scout membership year. GSMH is looking forward to an exciting year of program events, troop activities, "What Can a Girl Do?" product programs, and more. We can't wait to see what you and your girls are doing to discover, connect, and take action throughout the council!

All girl and adult members should be re-registered for the 2012-2013 year by now. If you have not registered, please do so soon. Forms are available at all GSMH service centers and online at  http://www.girlscoutsmoheartland.org/forms. Financial assistance is available for girl and adult membership dues, as well as books and uniforms, program event fees, and adult trainings.

Are You Certified?

Are you certified to take girls camping at a GSMH program center? You can be! Attend the upcoming Basic Outdoor Skills training at Mintahama Program Center.

The training covers outdoor skills such as knots, fire-building, and dressing for the weather, protecting the natural world, meal preparation, kaper charts and more. After completion, you are certified to take girls on a one-day outing or for backyard camping or cabin camping at a GSMH program center.

Basic Outdoor Skills is offered Saturday, October 13 at Mintahama Program Center from 9:00am-1:00pm and the cost is $6. The training will also be offered in the Springfield area on Saturday, October 27 from 9:00am-1:00pm and the cost is $6. The specific location for that training will be announced soon.

Participants should bring a pen/pencil, paper, mess kit (or non-breakable plate and eating utensils); drink and Girl Scout training card. A dunking bag is recommended, but not required. Lunch is prepared as part of the course.

Check out the Volunteer 411 for other offerings of this training. You can contact Melody Hutchison, Leadership & Learning Specialist - Volunteerism, with questions at 877-312-4764 x1122 or mhutchison@girlscoutsmoheartland.org

Travel Pathway:

GSMH Goes to Washington

 Capitol

If you are a Cadette, Senior or Ambassador, you can join us this summer in Washington, DC where you will see tons of amazing sites!

GSMH Goes to Washington is a council-sponsored trip for older Girl Scouts that takes place this summer. This five day, four night trip to the nation's capital will depart on Saturday, July 6 and return Wednesday, July 10 and will tentatively fly out of St. Louis.

Activities will include visiting the Smithsonian, The National Zoo - one of only four zoos in the US with pandas, famous national monuments and government buildings. Girls going on the trip will help plan optional activities like touring the White House, visiting Mount Vernon (George Washington's home), or a sunset cruise on the Potomac.

Approximate cost for the trip is $1,200 and will depend on airfare and activities chosen. The deadline to register for the trip is January 4. A deposit of $100 will hold your spot and then you can make monthly payments with the final balance due June 14. Because this is a council-sponsored trip, girls can use their Cookie Credit cards to help pay for the trip and scholarships are available. To register, use an Event Registration form.

If you have questions about the trip, please contact Stefanie McCall, Leadership and Learning Specialist - Girl Scout Leadership Experience at 1-877-312-4764 x1137 or smccall@girlscoutsmoheartland.org.
