Dear MMS families,
The dedicated staff at Mountaineer Montessori School has been hard at work preparing our school environments for the year ahead. We look forward to seeing old and new friends as we enter our 42nd year of providing authentic Montessori education in Charleston.
As the first days of school approach, I have a few announcements to share:
- New and returning families need to login to RenWeb/ParentsWeb and fill out all school forms. RenWeb/ParentsWeb is accessed from our website. If you experience any difficulties, please contact Beth.
- M Gear will be available for purchase at Back to School nights. Order forms will be available those nights as well.
- If your child will be staying for Plus, please reserve your spot by calling or emailing Beth at 304.342.7870 or [email protected]
- If your child needs to take medication at school, you must bring the medication in to Beth and complete the appropriate paperwork. Please call Beth if you have any questions about medications at school.

Thank you to the many parents and friends who have made special contributions to our school this summer. Special thanks to:
- Susie Newhouse and Janell West for designing and constructing beautiful upgrades to our sandbox.
- our friends at Unity of Kanawha Valley for partnering with us to continue to make improvements to the middle school classroom spaces.
- our friends at the University of Charleston for the new windows in the elementary building.
- staff members Becca Moore, Karen Kelly, Nancy Johnston, Isabelle Bournigault, Maria Kershner, Tysean Lynch, Alasha Al-Qudwah, for providing educational and fun experiences for our students during Campessori.
- all our FestivALL volunteers: Kenley Hanna, Samantha Hicks, Hollie Hubbert, Liz Stevens, and April Taylor, Mary Claire Davis, and Kayla Woodall.
- Nancy Johnston for organizing our Art-for-All make and take activity.
- Jay Stevens for coordinating facilities improvements at the main campus.
- Keeley Steele for working with our 7th year students to prepare and present the 8th year graduation ceremony dinner.
- Terry Hudson for hosting our middle school students at Hudson Farms during the 2017-2018 school year.
- Hollie Hubbert for organizing our Montessori Meet-Ups calendar.
- all the families who joined our group n the FestivAll Art Parade.
- summer program visiting artists and instructors Ray Singleton, Makenna Hope, Lindy Hoeft, Whitney Carney and Ron Sowell. Thank you for sharing your talents and expertise with the children!

The first three
MMS Parent U
classes will be devoted to “Montessori 101,” and will cover the following:
- “What is Montessori Education?,” Thursday, August 16, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Topics include the four planes of development and basic human tendencies and characteristics.
- “Freedom Within Limits,” Wednesday, September 5, 5:30-6:30 p.m.
- “The Individual Within the Community” and “At Home with Montessori,” Wednesday, September 12, 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Faculty for the first three sessions will be:
- Jennifer Carriger, MMS Director, AMS certified Montessori Administrator.
- Becca Moore, MMS Lower Elementary II Lead Guide, AMI certified Elementary (6-12 years) Educator.
- Susie Newhouse, MMS Plus Guide, AMS certified Early Childhood Educator and certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator.
In addition to Montessori education, future
Parent U
programs will also cover topics such as positive discipline, nutrition and technology/social media and children.
The first three
MMS Parent U
programs will be limited to current MMS families. Programs open to the public and educators are planned for later this fall and spring 2019.
MMS Parent U
will be held in the Upper Elementary classrooms. Childcare and dinner will be available for students through our Plus Program for a fee. At this time, Plus will be available for current MMS students only.
All MMS families are welcome to attend. Space is limited and priority will be given to new MMS parents.
ALL FAMILIES NEW TO MMS THIS YEAR SHOULD COUNT ON ATTENDING.
