SAVE THE DATE(S)! |
It seems that whenever we announce a new event to be held at the Italian Cemetery, we immediately get a flood of e-mails and calls asking us the same question:
"Will there be another one after that?"
So for those who like to plan far in advance, here are the dates of the most popular events that are planned for the remainder of the year:
Italian Heritage Tours (last three for 2011):
- Saturday, July 9th
- Saturday, August 13th
- Sunday, September 22th
Italian Genealogy and Dual Citizenship Workshop (last one for 2011) :
Beginning Conversational Italian Class
- Fridays, beginning on September 2nd and running through November 4th
La Festa dei Morti
More details will follow in future newsletters, but now is the time to enter these dates on your calendars. And, no, there won't be any more after that (at least not until next year).
For more information or to reserve your place for any of the above events, please click here.

This is a reprint of Nickolas Marinelli's weekly column that appeared in the newspaper
L'Italo-Americano on June 9, 2011.

ACHILLE PALADINI
IL re di pesce
Born in 1838 in the province of Ancona in the Marche region, Achille Paladini was, from the beginning of his life, no stranger to the sea. Though his father was a stage coach driver, growing up on the Adriatic Coast provided Paladini with a more-than-passing familiarity with the fishing trade. While still a young man, he ran away to join Garibaldi's army of Red Shirts in the fight for Italian Unification. After receiving an honorable discharge, he returned home. For several years thereafter he worked as a sailor on board ships sailing the coast of the Italian peninsula. In 1865, he took a job sailing around Cape Horn, and disembarked in San Francisco with only ten dollars in his pocket.
Paladini's grandson (and namesake)tells a family story of how his grandfather got into the fishing trade: "One day while fishing for his supper, he caught two fish on one hook. A tired gold miner offered to purchase the other fish, and as they say...'the rest is history!'"
Achille Paladini, however, gave a different version of his entry into the fishing business in an interview with journalist Pauline Jacobson, less than two weeks before he died of a stroke...

MEMORIAL DAY MASS AND SCAMPAGNATA |
The Italian Cemetery's second annual Memorial Day Scampagnata drew record crowds on Monday, May 30, 2011.
The day's events started with a Mass in the Italian language, which was celebrated in the newly-refurbished Chapel Mausoleum. The standing-room-only Mass was concelebrated by Father Efrem Trettel, OFM, and Father Gerald Caprio, OSB.
Maria Fassio Pignati, State President of the Order Sons of Italy in America, graced us with her beautiful, angelic, soprano voice as she led the hymns for the Mass in the Italian language.
Following the Mass, everyone was invited to a complimentary lunch on the lawn outside, where hundreds enjoyed the music of the Aurora Mandolin Orchestra and feasted on penne quattro formaggi con salsiccie prepared by Nickolas Marinelli, and home-made bruschetta rustica prepared by Andy and Miriam Canepa.
It was a wonderful time to re-connect with old friends, meet new friends, and remember our loved ones who have gone before us.

NEW SEASON OF HERITAGE TOURS HAS BEGUN |

The Italian Cemetery is once again offering guided tours of the grounds, the final resting places of the pioneers of the Italian Community, and the special "behind the scenes" areas that are rarely seen by the public.
Nickolas Marinelli, our Director of Community Relations, leads the tours, which are held once a month from April through September. Beginning at 11:00 a.m., we'll meet in the cemetery office for coffee, biscotti, and a pictorial introduction to the tour. Then we'll go out and enjoy a guided walking tour of the key points of interest. At the conclusion of the tour, we'll enjoy a complimentary Italian lunch together.
The next tour is scheduled for Saturday, July 9th. To ensure that everyone gets the most out of the tour, space is limited and early registration is encouraged. To reserve your space for the free tour, please send e-mail to Nickolas@ItalianCemetery.com

LASTING MEMORIES MAUSOLEUM TO OPEN THIS AUTUMN |
| | The Lasting Memories Mausoleum |
Once available only to nobility and the extremely wealthy, above-ground entombment in a mausoleum has been the preferred choice for families at the Italian Cemetery for generations. Beginning in 1904 with the first "community mausoleum" built by famed architect John Porporato, the Italian Cemetery has continued to build beautiful, high-quality mausolea for families that prefer the security and prestige of a mausoleum, and a clean, dry environment for their loved ones.
Our newest offering is the Lasting Memories Mausoleum located on the north campus of the Italian Cemetery. This new structure includes both indoor and outdoor spaces. We offer a full selection of both individual and companion spaces at all levels.
The new Lasting Memories Mausoleum will be two buildings in one, allowing for an equal number of outdoor and indoor crypts. Ground was broken in January for the new mausoleum, and completion is anticipated this autumn.
The Italian Cemetery is offering pre-development discounts. These discounts apply only while construction is in progress, and will end upon completion of the project. This is a one-time-only opportunity to save hundreds or even thousands of dollars, depending on the location selected.
If you would like further information, including pricing, please e-mail us by clicking here, or call us at 650-755-1511.
