Student Reach Up 12%!
The 2017-2018 school year launched on August 10 and we're happy to report that requests are up 12% over last fall with 158 classrooms using JA's traditional method (delivered over a series of weeks) and 127 JA-in-a-Day method (delivered in one day, back-to-back). That said, we still have 36 classrooms that need volunteers.

Volunteer Spotlight - Denise Farias, Mims
How many years have you been a JA volunteer?
I've been a volunteer for 5 years now.
What is your favorite grade/JA program?
My favorite grade is first grade, they are so loveable and like to learn!
Why did you choose JA?
I chose JA because I love to be around children and I think the program could not be easier to teach. The kids love seeing me every week with new materials to learn and to give out. The teachers I work with also love the program as they incorporate it into their lessons. I learn something new every time I teach JA. The kids get a sense of accomplishment and get excited when they receive their certificates. It is also great to see the kids I have worked with give me hugs at Walmart, and the parents thank me.
Where do you work?
I work at the Brevard County Property Appraisers office and have been there 35 years.
Do you volunteer for any other organizations?
I volunteer for many other organizations including Brevard County Sheriff's office, American Red Cross, Cocoa and Titusville Police Departments, Melbourne Air Show, and I'm now the Coordinator for North Brevard Toys for Tots.
What are your hobbies?
I do not have much time for hobbies as I'm on the run between work, family and volunteering. But I love giving back to our great community.
Program Updates - JA Blended Programs
JA Blended programs are rolling out this year. What is a Blended program? They 'blend' the best of our printed kits with cutting-edge digital elements, making the overall experience more fun and interactive for both volunteer and students. During training, the volunteer still receives a kit of materials, but they also get special access to online materials that supplement the program. Volunteers will use the teacher's computer and overhead projector to display videos and play online games with the students in addition to the handouts in the kit. The programs that will be transitioning this year are JA Global Marketplace, JA It's My Future, and JA Personal Finance. Some additional training will be required even of seasoned volunteers before heading into the classroom with these new programs, but we guarantee the results will enhance your volunteer experience!
Events
Bad news and good news! Bad news: The 2017 JA Golf Classic has been rescheduled to November 3 due to Hurricane Irma. Good news: There's more time to register your foursome, and support the good work JA is doing in Brevard. If you are interested in playing, please contact Anne at [email protected] . The Golf classic directly supports JA's mission ensuring that we can reach more than 11,000 students in Brevard this school year at no cost to the schools or teachers.
