River of Life

by Amy Romero, LPC, RPT

        River of Life Technique

Recommended Age Range:  ages 10-17

Treatment Modality:  Individual Therapy

Rationale for Activity:

Children who are verbally and emotionally abused, victims of bullying, or who develop a poor self-concept through divorce or other life events, often develop internal self-defeating messages that lower their self-esteem.  The "River of Life" activity is an assessment and working tool used to identify key points in a person's life where these self-defeating messages were created.  It also identifies key factors that contributed to the formation of these beliefs.  This activity allows the client to challenge the negative beliefs developed from life's difficulties. Clients will also recognize personal strengths and healthy coping patterns, as well as coping mechanisms that were not useful.  This activity also provides the client with identifying support systems throughout their life span.

Goals of Activity:

1This activity is an assessment tool used to identify and measure the duration and the extent of internalized self-defeating messages.

2. This activity is also a working tool that allows the client to identify and process significant negative events and the impact these events have had on their life.

3. This activity fosters the use of cognitive-behavioral restructuring by re-visiting the events, exploring thoughts and feelings about these events, identifying self-messages associated with these events, and behavioral reactions.

4. This activity facilitates the identification of patterns and triggers that cause the client to experience anxiety and/or depression.

5. This activity allows the client to challenge and overcome negative self-defeating beliefs developed throughout his/her life.
