January, 2018

Dear Friend:

With the start of the legislative session in January, half of the week I now spend in Albany advocating for more resources for my district and working on legislation to better the lives of all New Yorkers.

The 2018-19 New York State Budget is due on March 31st, and there are many opportunities for people to make their opinions and needs known so that we can better advocate on your behalf. There are three upcoming Community Budget Forums scheduled in February regarding Governor Cuomo's proposed 2018-19 Executive Budget, and I hope you'll be able to attend one. Please find more details below.

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie has announced the release of the Yellow Book, which is the Assembly Majority's Review and Analysis of the 2018-19 Executive Budget. Using this analysis as a resource, the Assembly Majority conference has begun meeting to work on our own budget proposal.

As always, please do not hesitate to let me know if my office can be of assistance to you.

Warm regards,

Shelley B. Mayer

NEW YORK BUS SERVICE
WORKING GROUP
Assemblymembers, public transportation advocates, and staff at the Bus Service Working Group on January 23rd in Albany.

On Januar y 23rd, I was proud to co-host a meeting with my Assembly colleagues and public transportation  a dvocates to discuss improvements we can make to better bus service statewide. I was glad to hear ideas from the Riders Alliance, Straphangers Campaign, TransitCenter, and the Tri-State Transportation Campaign on ways we can improve.

The Bee-Line Bus System serves thousands of people in Westchester, and represents the major--if not only--way to get to work, go to school, or do their shopping. The Governor's 2018-19 Executive Budget proposal includes a modest increase in funding for non-NYC public bus systems, and I believe we can do better. I will continue working to increase funds for the Bee-Line Bus System.

There's more the state legislature can do to better the overall experience of bus riders and improve bus systems state-wide, and I am happy to keep engaging on these issues as we design a way forward.

BOOSTING SCHOOL READINESS WITH THE
UNITED WAY OF WESTCHESTER & PUTNAM

This past month, I was happy to meet with Alana Sweeny, the President and CEO of the United Way of Westchester and Putnam, to discuss the expansion of a project enhancing parent engagement and school readiness in preschool children thanks to a grant I was able to secure for the non-profit.

The Parent Engagement for School Readiness project provides parents with a deck of cards containing 200 activities they can do with their preschool children that strengthens the child's reading and other academic skills. Each of the activities is written in both English and Spanish in order to serve the large Spanish-speaking community living in Westchester County.

The state grant allows the United Way of Westchester and Putnam to distribute the 100 Days of Learning decks of cards to 2,000 additional families in Yonkers through Yonkers Basics, My Brother's Keeper, and other non-profit organizations serving low-income families.

I commend the United Way of Westchester and Putnam for creating a low-cost program that can have significant impact on preschool children's school readiness.
