CfJJ publishes two editorials on school-based arrests following Arrested Futures release
Arrested FuturesCfJJ's latest report on school-based arrests in Massachusetts' three largest school districts - Boston, Worcester, and Springfield - has been featured in a number of media outlets over the past several weeks (including Salon, the Boston GlobeRadioBoston on WBUR, and the Bay State Banner). We would like to highlight two follow-up pieces authored by CfJJ that were recently published by The Republican, a Springfield-based newspaper.

The first piece, published May 7 and co-authored by Robert Fleischner of the Center for Public Representation, highlights the significant impact of school-based arrests on 17-year-old students. Despite the fact that the majority of school-arrests are based on non-violent "public order" offenses, 17-year-olds are automatically tried as adults and receive permanent, and public, criminal records.

The second piece, published May 20 and co-authored by Nancy Murray of the Massachusetts ACLU, provides a response to the statement previously submitted to The Republican by outgoing Springfield Superintendent Alan Ingram. In this editorial, CfJJ and the ACLU call on Springfield to select a new superintendent who can provide meaningful leadership and work with families, staff, and the community to find solutions that keep kids in school.
Additional Arrested Futures press highlights
Yesterday, our report was picked up by Salon as part of an in-depth article on disabled students facing increasingly harsh disciplinary practices in schools across the country. The article reference several news stories and reports, including Arrested Futures, and is available here.

Also, a separate article on the report was published in the Republican this past week detailing the Springfield NAACP's call for action from the school department in response to the findings of our report. That article is available here.
