JOIN A JANUARY 2018 STATE BUDGET ACTION NEAR YOU.
Governor Brown will release his January Budget Recommendations for California’s 2018-19 budget on or before the January 10th deadline. CARA, California Partnership, Californians 4 SSI and the Health and Human Service Network will hold rallies and press conferences in Sacramento, San Francisco, Bakersfield, Los Angeles, Coachella and Riverside to respond to Governor Brown’s January Budget Proposal. Will Governor Jerry Brown’s ‘legacy budget’ invest in our communities? The state’s $7.5 billion in “unexpected cash” (this is an estimate from the Legislative Analyst's Office) will make it more difficult for the governor to justify the austerity he has shown in previous budgets/years for the 20% of Californians living in poverty and the other 20% living “near poverty” (“near-poverty” to the U.S. Census means people struggling to pay for food and shelter). The rainy day fund the Governor prioritized in year’s past was well funded in the last year’s budget so the state is now well positioned for the Governor's imagined impending economic crisis. The LAO states, "If the economy experiences a moderate recession, the state has enough reserves to cover its deficits until 2021‑22." (

We hope that Governor Brown will, in his final year, use more accurate forecasts in this year’s budget recommendations then he did in last year's. Join CARA and our partners in Sacramento, San Francisco, Bakersfield, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Coachella and Riverside to let Governor Brown know that the wealthiest state in wealthiest nation in the world should be ashamed that 40% of its residents live at or in poverty! Our state can afford to increase SSI payments, and increase funding for programs from home care to child care, education, social services, food programs and health care (to name a few). Here are the current plans and details around the state. Contact the folks listed to confirm events, and show up wearing CARA t-shirts!

After months and months of phone calls, letters, and meetings urging the Assembly to allow AB 1506 to be heard, the Assembly Housing Committee is scheduled to hold its’ first hearing and vote on AB 1506 which would repeal the state restriction on rent control - the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act.
The hearing will be held on Thursday, January 11th at 9:00amam in State Capitol, Room 4202 at the Assembly Housing and Community Development Committee meeting.
