JPS STUDENTS MAKE GAINS ON MAAP TESTS

The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) has released statewide results from the 2016-17 Mississippi Academic Assessment Program (MAAP). JPS students showed steady progress in both ELA and mathematics. Sixth graders improved 9.13 percent on ELA assessments. Fifth graders showed the most consistent growth with gains of 6.6 percent on Math and 6.37 percent on ELA assessments.

INTRODUCING NEW PRINCIPALS FOR THE 2017-2018 SCHOOL YEAR

Jackson Public Schools has named new principals to head 13 schools for the 2017-2018 school year. Many of the District's new building administrators are homegrown leaders, rising through the ranks of JPS schools and District support offices.

JPS ANNOUNCES INTENT TO APPLY FOR 21ST CENTURY GRANT
The Jackson Public School District is pleased to formally announce our intent to apply for the Mississippi Department of Education 21st Century Community Learning Center program grant for the upcoming 2017-2018 year.

SIX POWER APAC SCHOLARS EARN AP STUDIO PORTFOLIO RECOGNITION

Power APAC had six visual arts students to pass the AP Studio Portfolio in 2017. The participants included five seniors-Nytaya Babbitt, Shuntia Battle,Kamryn Darby, Armand Jackson, and Victoria Wright. One sophomore,
Lucie Cooper, earned passing scores on two portfolio submissions. 
BACKPACK BUDDIES GET SCHOOL YEAR OFF TO A GREAT START FOR SCHOLARS

The Junior League of Jackson (JLJ) delivered 500 backpacks before the start of school. Through Backpack Buddies, the JLJ gave the backpacks to K-5 students at five JPS elementary schools. Clausell Elementary was one of the first recipients of the book bags. 
ATTORNEY LETITIA JOHNSON TAKES OATH OF OFFICE TO JOIN JPS SCHOOL BOARD
Mayor Chokwe Lumumba's appointment of Letitia Simmons Johnson to serve on the JPS School Board was approved by the City Council. A Swearing-In Ceremony was held Friday, August 4. Johnson was appointed to fill the Ward 2 seat on the Board.
45 SENIORS COMPLETE GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS IN SUMMER SCHOOL

Jackson Public Schools held a commencement ceremony for 45 summer high school graduates July 26, 2017. Family and friends cheered as the graduates entered the auditorium at Murrah High School.

JPS EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM RECEIVES FRIENDS OF FROG STREET AWARD

Frog Street Press presented the Friends of Frog Street Award to Jackson Public Schools for educators who have exceeded expectations in implementing the Frog Street early learning curriculum. 

JPS STUDENTS GAIN TECH SKILLS AT NATIONAL FLIGHT ACADEMY

A group of 104 JPS students successfully completed the National Flight Academy's AIR Ambition program, which took place in the summer of 2017 at the Pensacola Naval Air Station. Participating were high school JROTC cadets, Junior Cadet Corps students from Powell Middle School, and 23 students who are mentees of 100 Black Men of Jackson, Inc.

HELP THE FAMILIES OF HISD RECOVER FROM HARVEY
The Houston Independent School District continues to have an immediate need for children's clothes of all sizes (clean and in reasonably good repair), school uniforms, and school supplies. Some 50 of the Houston schools have been flooded to a degree, and many families are staying in other less-damaged schools. Students do not have extra clothes or school supplies. to make a donation to the Houston schools, please go to http://www.houstonisd.org/Page/164281.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Christopher Hawkins, a fifth-grade student at Boyd Elementary. He is a member of the honor society. He wants to attend Mississippi State University, become a lawyer and run for president of the United States.

MOMENT OF INSPIRATION
Minister James Fuller delivered the Moment of Inspiration. Minister Fuller is a senior at Murrah High School. He is a member of Mt. Charity Baptist Church and his been in the ministry for three years. He is a student leader of the Mustangs for Christ Choir at Murrah.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Alexandra Bailey, an eighth-grade student at Chastain Middle School. Her favorite subjects are math and science. Her extracurricular activities are dance, drama, and karate. She sings in the choir at Christ Holiness Church where she is a member.

MOMENT OF INSPIRATION
Rev. Arthur Alvin Sutton is the pastor of the Progressive Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson. He is a graduate of Forest Hill High and Jackson State University. He is currently president of the Forest Hill PTSA. He is currently employed as the Drop Out Prevention coordinator.
