JULY 2015
HAPPY 4TH OF JULY
PRESIDENT'S PEN
July 2015

I'm very excited to be writing my first submission for the Presidents Pen section of our monthly newsletter!

First, I would like to extend a special thank you to all of our long time members and dedicated volunteers for the opportunity to serve as President.

Our previous President Larry Skates has left a big pair of sandals to fill. Not only did he complete two consecutive terms as President, but was a guiding presence at more planning and committee meetings than anyone could add up. Having led the organization through transitions in staff and our 1st national travelling exhibit he has been a presence at practically every function and done an exemplary job serving the needs of the organization and facilitating its continued growth.

Although the summer heat brings a slow down for Museum traffic, there is no shortage of activity within the organization.

Meetings have begun to plan and develop this year's Night at the Museum event, there are also planning and development meetings being held over these summer months to begin our preparations for 2018's 250th anniversary event for New Smyrna.

Robert and I have begun a coordinated effort to define our fund raising events so that I can begin soliciting sponsorship from some of our local merchants and institutions that have expressed a willingness to participate in these types of events.  He and I will also be investigating the possibility of applying for new types of grant monies that we may be able to use for special projects to improve our museum facility for future use.

The New Smyrna Museum of History is a unique and wonderful venue that surpasses the expectations of practically all who visit!

I am excited about the opportunity to serve the organization that works so hard to make this wonderful community asset a possibility.

I'm looking forward to seeing you at the Museum or one of our upcoming meetings.

President, Greg Holbrook

Sestercentennial Celebration 2018

I know it's hard to believe but New Smyrna Beach will be celebrating its 250th birthday in 2018! That's right in 1768 the Smyrnea Settlement became active with over 1,250 Minorcans, Greeks, and others. Despite the difficulties they encountered and the ultimate failure of the settlement New Smyrna Beach is today a thriving and prosperous city.

In 2018 the New Smyrna Museum of History is going to help produce an event to commemorate our long history here. While we have a committee chair and have had a couple of brainstorming sessions it's time to really start the planning. Would you like to be a part of this committee and help bring one of the biggest events ever to New Smyrna Beach? Whether you are a leader, a follower or a bit of both we need you and your ideas. If you would like to be a part please contact Robert at the museum. He will gather and pass along your contact information so that you can be kept up to date on future planning meetings.

Let's make our Sestercentennial an event that is talked about for years to come!

Volunteer of the Month

Dr. Roger Grange

Dr. Roger Grange

Dr. Roger Grange is one of or two resident archaeologists. You can read the "Digger's Digest" column that either he or Dot Moore writes each month in this newsletter.

Dr. Grange earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees at the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Arizona. He has worked as an Assistant in Anthropology at the Field Museum in Chicago. He later served as Curator, Assistant Museum Director and Museum Director of the State Historical Society in Nebraska. He is the founding chairman of the Department of Anthropology at the University of South Florida and is Professor Emeritus from that institution. He has done archaeological field work in Arizona, South Dakota, South Carolina, Michigan, Florida, Newfoundland, Quebec, England and Wales.

Since retiring to New Smyrna Beach to surf, Dr. Grange has found a further career in working with Dot Moore on sites relating to the Turnbull Settlement.  Roger and Dot continue to follow leads and supervise and participate in digs related to Turnbull where possible. They are often referred to property owners by the City of New Smyrna Beach when construction or demolition is happening in an area considered historic. Roger and Dot have collaborated on many scholarly articles discussing the finds made here in New Smyrna Beach. Their research is important in piecing together what life was like here almost 250 years ago.

In addition to his archaeological work Roger has given several presentations at the museum dealing with his other interests. These talks have included subjects such a Vikings and Iceland. Roger was a presenter during our Museum on Main Street Lecture series where he discussed his life as an archaeologist.

If you see him here at the museum be sure to say hi and also do a silly walk! He'll understand.

Archaeology is working hard. It doesn't look like we are busy, but we are.  Excavations at the Blanchette site are  paused temporarily but will resume as soon as possible. In the meantime we are preparing to test a site in town which is on the periphery of the Turnbull settlement central town area and also adjacent to a location where  19th century  Seminole War materials were salvaged some years ago. It is likely that a prehistoric occupation is also present, so this looks like some fun in the hot sun will be starting ASAP.  All of these things intrude upon the ongoing effort to finish a  detailed report on two Turnbull site buildings. At long last the hundreds of artifacts have been classified and tabulated, a dreary process .....BUT the fun of analysis and writing are about to begin.
