Preparing for ERB Testing
Dear Parents of Salisbury Academy:

As we look ahead to our scheduled testing that will take place for all students in grades 3-8 this month, we wanted to provide you with some additional details and offer a parent coffee for more conversation. Salisbury Academy uses the ERB (Educational Records Bureau) to provide rigorous, level-appropriate assessments of student progress in meeting essential academic standards. Salisbury Academy uses the ERB because we believe it is the most respected and most rigorous standardized testing program used by leading independent and public schools across the country.

Salisbury Academy students take the ERB's CTP4R-Comprehensive Testing Program. This is a reasoning/achievement test battery that is designed to measure learning. Salisbury Academy uses results from the ERB to evaluate our curriculum, to review the progress of whole classes, and to monitor individual student progress. This test is administered over a five-day period and typically takes an hour or so each day. Students in grades 6-8 will test the week of April 16-20 and students in grades 3-5 will test the week of April 23-27.

Here are some tips for parents to help their children during the ERB testing week:

1 - Ensure students get a good night's sleep.
2 - Make sure students eat a healthy breakfast before school to nourish the body and brain.
3 - Keep to a schedule and routine during ERB week.
4 - Be on time to school! Students should arrive with plenty of time to get into "school mode" before taking the test.
5 - Encourage your child to put forth their effort without over-stressing the child.
6 - The ERB's are not an assessment you can study for, so don't try to study extra for the tests.

Parents will receive detailed student progress reports later this quarter. If you would like to learn more about the assessment or see a sample student report, please join me for coffee on Friday, April 13 at 8 a.m. for an overview and question and answer session.

Sincerely,

Beverly Fowler, Head of School

Traveling Through Time in the Fourth Grade
Emmy Pendleton presents as Martha Washington.
Salisbury Academy's fourth grade traveled back in time and became a host of fascinating historical figures in their recent Time Machine Museum. Figures represented were diverse in the time periods in which they lived and in their contributions to society, and included individuals ranging from Jackie Robinson to Claude Monet to Neil Armstrong.

For the project, students each read a biography on a deceased historical figure and created a first-person oral presentation to share with visitors and fellow classmates. When asked why they identified with their figures, students were thoughtful in their answers:

Bryant Davis as astronaut and aeronautical engineer Neil Armstrong:
"I chose Neil Armstrong because he proved that nothing was impossible, and I enjoy learning about Outer Space."

Carrie Robson as president Theodore Roosevelt:
"I wanted to learn about him because he was a very interesting person with an interesting life. He loved the country and our military, and he did a lot to help our environment."

Virginia Walser as actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr:
"I chose to represent her because she was an amazing inventor who came up with wi-fi technology that we use today in bluetooth, wireless phones, and other products. Also, she was born on my birthday."

Adbul Eliwa as Apple CEO and co-founder Steve Jobs:
"I love Apple products, and Steve Jobs is important because he invented a lot of the Apple products that we use today."

Finnegan Avery as president Abraham Lincoln:
"I like him because he helped set people free, and we are both tall."

Mary Grace Antosek as French impressionist painter Claude Monet:
"I chose him because I really like art and drawing, and I like impressionist art. Claude Monet was a famous impressionist painter."

Avery Smith as pioneer American aviator Lincoln Beachey:
"I chose him because no one really remembers him and I think he's really interesting. He taught himself to do a lot of the things he did. He was the best airplane pilot, and Congress even stopped their session to watch him."
